Very, very few statues of women, but this one is of Emmeline Pankhurst, leader of the Suffragettes, early 20th century. It's in Manchester, England, where she was born. My home town. Votes for Women. Deeds Not Words.
I'm not in the least bit interested in football (soccer), but here is a photo I took of the Tom Finney sculpture outside his club Preston North End, Lancashire. Local hero, much loved.
@robedwards1.bsky.social I thought abt you this morning. Peter Singer, philosopher from your neck of the woods. Being discussed on BBC Sounds re his seminal book - Animal Liberation. Pub'd in the 1970s! Seems he started by sitting next to a vegetarian one lunchtime! We can lead by example!
"A hen is one of the most devoted & caring mothers - hence the term 'Mother Hen' meaning protective, nurturing & attentive. She doesn't deserve to spend her life behind bars. Life in a cage is no life at all."
@theipaper.com I see in your paper today a photo and article on the running of the bulls in Pamplona. You do this every year. Not once have you said what happens to the animals at the end. So I attach a photo to show you. Tormented, tortured, killed & dragged from the ring.
Read a true account of a woman rescuing a hare, learning all about them, and discovering what delightful creatures they are.
Lovely. So sweet. I bought this card for my husband because our GSD loved him so much. I got permission from the card designer to show this. 'I do solemnly promise to follow you anywhere'. And she did.
To our US friends - you know you have the world's sympathy for what you're going through with simpletons in charge. I was thinking only today about US authors I've read. You have got serious, educated people, world famous academics. Good & serious times will come again. eg -
I was brought up on English literature. Didn't read anything American till my 30s at university. Even then, nothing by Truman Capote. Just picked this up. The writing is really quite good. Enjoying it.
@bylinetimes.bsky.social I wasn't going to read Alanna Byrne's item on the football world cup as I loathe football & I don't care if my country (England) loses. But she links it with flags. I'm angry that the rt-wing has stolen my flag. She mentions the Union Jill for the UK. I could go with that.
Me too! After I'd banged my nose, twice! I've put a transfer on ours. Our dogs were always brighter than me.
Hedgehog feeding her babies (not nice to say hoglets!). I've seen a similar photo of a row of tiny, pink rear feet. Wish I'd kept it.
I never did enjoy it because I wasn't aware of it. I'm grateful to campaigners years ago (who were more dismissed or laughed at then than now) who opened my eyes. Usually through leaflets, eg this b/w one from the UK Vegan Society. So, I gave up dairy.
That's nice, you're so right. This was Bailey, our last old girl. 15, her last photo. We're too old now to take any more rescues, sadly. Nice to talk to you.
To my literary friends. What do you think of this book by Harper Lee? Sequel to To Kill a Mocking Bird. Some controversy about it & criticism by some reviewers. I wasn't very impressed a few years ago but, on re-reading it, I'm enjoying the writing. Not finished it yet.
'Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will not find peace.' Albert Schweitzer.
@bylinetimes.bsky.social Just reading the June issue, & the excellent @labourlewis.bsky.social on the UK's need for 'Real National Resilience'. This article should be compulsory reading in schools/niversities/community groups. But, sorry, Clive, we'll not copy Finland; only muddle through, as ever.
Rachel Carson, US scientist in the 1960s highlighted the dangers of DDT. It was killing birds (& other wildlife too). Hence Silent Spring. And we STILL harm the wildlife we need.
If they are, then this one is keeping them in order! Penny the matriarch. Thanks again.
Lovely day, so out in the garden at last. This time last year, Bailey was gardening with me (well, watching) but she's gone now. I miss her.
