Researching the parish of Rillington, North Yorkshire, since 2004. Exploring the relationships between people, place, and time through genealogy, local history, and the landscape itself. Ginger Goodwin kin www.rillingtonhistory.com
I have great concerns for the crops around #Rillington. Everywhere is parched however was good to see the hay bales stacked up and ready for collection. Winter is coming! #OnePlaceWednesday
📍 On the Ground in #Rillington #LocalHistory isn't always found in an archive. Sometimes it’s as simple as erecting a bench, inscribing your name and adding an invitation to “Enjoy the View.” A small mark on the landscape by a current villager in living memory. #OnePlaceWednesday
📮 History comes in all shapes and sizes. From the soaring stones of Canterbury Cathedral to a humble wall post box still doing the job it was designed for, both remind us that the past is woven into everyday life. #PostBoxSaturday #LocalHistory
A day to remember. 🎓 Received my Licentiateship in #Heraldry & #Genealogy (LHG) today. The greatest gift has been the @ihgs.bsky.social community. Qualifications are earned individually, but rarely achieved alone. 15 years of friendship and support made this a truly special journey. #OnePlaceStudy
Fields on top of the #Yorkshire #Wolds near #Rillington #OnePlaceStudy This is how the landscape rolls.
Today the Rill was filled with laughter as the annual duck race brought the community together once again. Sometimes local history isn’t about looking backwards. It’s about recognising today’s traditions as tomorrow’s history. #Rillington #OnePlaceStudy
#Knaresborough Bed Race was an exceptional day yesterday. Increasing in popularity, the atmosphere was palpable. Here is the best YouTube video for the full extent of the race and my beautiful home town. I was spotted at the bottom of the High Street youtu.be/VRRYIrsEBCE?...
And the tradition continues! A wonderful afternoon spent with good-natured people.
After 25 years of researching #Rillington, I am delighted to share that I have been awarded the Licentiateship of @ihgs.bsky.social. My thesis, “ALL CHANGE”: Railways & Societal Alteration in Mid-C19 Rillington, explores how one parish can reveal wider patterns of social change. #OnePlaceWednesday
A fascinating day at #ShibdenHall exploring the world of #AnneLister. Heiress, businesswoman and keeper of famous coded diaries, she challenged expectations from an early age. Dressed in black and wearing a top hat, she was formidable, independent & utterly unapologetic. #FamilyHistory #LocalHistory
On the ground in Rillington. This eighteenth-century road map shows #Rillington between Malton and Scarborough. Look closely & you’ll spot several small streams, or rills, crossing the route. Roads, water and settlement shaped this landscape long before the railway. #OnePlaceWednesday #LocalHistory
Summer on the River Nidd beneath #Knaresborough Viaduct. Places matter because memories happen there. #FamilyHistory #LocalHistory
Levisham station on the early Whitby & Pickering #Railway, opened in 1836 and engineered through some of Yorkshire’s most difficult terrain. Inclines, rope-worked sections, glacial valleys and steep gradients shaped the line long before the later railway era reached #Rillington #OnePlaceWednesday 🚂
Rustons appear repeatedly in early C19th #Rillington: directories, parish regs, land records & MIs. A gravestone tells only part of the story but when records are triangulated, individuals emerge with precision & confidence becoming something deeper than isolated names on a page. #OnePlaceWednesday
This old #signpost stands at a meeting point of landscape & geology on the #YorkshireWolds northern edge. The chalk hills meet former glacial Lake Pickering, whose ancient sediments helped create fertile soils that shaped settlement & agriculture around #Rillington for centuries. #OnePlaceWednesday

Edwin Percival Harrison (1897-1983), Rillington: coal merchant, bicycle repairer and seller, later the local school crossing keeper (lollipop man). One life, several roles - change on the ground. #OnePlaceStudy #MicroHistory #FamilyHistory #LocalKnowledge
“All Change” - Railway and Societal Alteration in Mid-Nineteenth-Century Rillington. Seriously folks, I’ve nearly completed my #Licentiate #Thesis #Railway @ihgs.bsky.social @rwldproject.bsky.social Currently proof-reading and stitching together, send strength! 🤓 🚂#OnePlaceWednesday
This account shares research from an ongoing #OnePlaceStudy of #Rillington #Scampston, exploring how national change shaped ordinary lives in the mid C19. Through records, land & family history, it traces continuity, disruption, & resilience at a local level. History often hides in plain sight.
So looking forward to your NRY transcripts. Book format for the ERY. Happy days! 👍😀 #HearthTax
Two very different memorials about the same man. Dr John Simpson, later Hudleston, was a major landowner in #Rillington & also the man behind the infamous #Knaresborough Castle Yard Riot of 1865–6. Left his mark in both places I’ve called home. Was he always calling out to me? #OnePlaceWednesday
Starbeck used to be an important junction with heavy goods traffic from the North to Leeds with 40 passenger trains daily. The locomotive shed built in 1857 was extended to become the longest two-track engine shed in Britain. It was a major influence for the rising village of Starbeck. #Railway200
Every now a then a previously unknown book surfaces that’s exactly what’s needed for my #IHGSLicentiate research. This could not be more timely as landowners played a vital part in the mid C19 during the coming of the railway. Lucky me! @ihgs.bsky.social #Rillington #OnePlaceWednesday #LocalHistory
Magnificence in blue and gold. #CarlisleCathedral #churchcrawling #sacredspaces
Don’t make me choose between the beauty of the exterior and interior of #BeverleyMinster. The stonework, light and peace tell a story of faith and craftsmanship that’s echoed throughout the #EastRiding of #Yorkshire for centuries. #SacredSpace
