Irish Kiwi living in Ōtautahi. Nerdy lefty neurodivergent; owns many fountain pens, hammocks, and boxes of craft supplies. Sometimes uses them.
Sand art. I had no idea this was a thing, let alone that Andrew Clemens was so mind-blowingly good at it in the 1800s. How did he have the patience?! www.antiquetrader.com/art/rare-san...
Live your life so that people are seeing posts like this, one after the other, when you die.
I enjoyed the Matariki community event in the Red Zone in Christchurch this afternoon. The hāngī was very popular and smelled great—hope they didn't run out of food before the last people in the very long queue!
Matariki is my favourite holiday here in New Zealand. Time to remember those we've lost, appreciate the present, and set intentions for the future, plus a day off work for most folk? I think I can get behind that. I offered up some food in the form of baking, which I have hardly done in years.
This evening I amused myself by making the moon line up with the weathervane on this local church.
Toastie Takeover is happening again! www.toastietakeover.com I am both intrigued and repelled by this entry from The Bog 😆
I am up past my bedtime but that was time well spent. I only got this out of the library yesterday morning!
The Ōpāwaho / Heathcote river looking steamy in the cold this morning. We had hot sunny 25c weather two days ago and today people are pouring water over their car windscreens to de-ice them before they can drive.
Just thinking about the most fun gig I've ever been to, which was the Polyphonic Spree in Belfast in 2004. I can definitely understand the appeal of cults where people sing and dance together and everyone wears special gowns because it was just a great vibe. Not my pic but it was pretty much this.
I cannot now remember the exact nature of the "crafts by kids" entries that are apparently traditional at NZ A&P shows and were discussed here a while back, but my mum in Ireland just sent these of the local equivalent show in her home town and I think they're along very similar lines 😁
Survived my first day back at work since 2025, enjoyed some rain, *and* a $377 GST refund appeared like magic in my bank account. Happy Monday to me 😁
Love the new Matariki postage stamps! collectables.nzpost.co.nz/matariki2026...
I really thought this header text on the Warehouse website read "BRALESS", and the image didn't exactly dispel that misunderstanding 😆
After two months in Europe I am very much enjoying being able to take the top off the milk properly again in NZ, instead of having it remain attached to annoy me every time I want to pour milk.
I got a cracker view of Sydney Harbour when we were leaving for Christchurch yesterday. Glad I scooted over to that side of the mostly-empty plane as soon as the seat belt sign went off!
I for one would not be looking so delighted if gulls were circling directly above the open top of my vehicle 🐦⬛💩
Cat, plus a quite magnificent carpet that was fitted in the family home around 1980 and is still going strong in the sitting room.
The farm sheds haven't been used in a long time and some of the oldest ones are only fit for demolition now, but they're full of memories for me, especially what was the calving shed. As soon as I slid open the doorhandle and walked through the door I could almost smell straw and cows.
I never thought I'd say this, but it was Far Too Hot in Ireland this past few days and I am glad the heatwave has broken. I had to wear SPF30 and felt sticky all over with the humidity. In Kerry!!! The sheep were very hot and uncomfortable, panting away in their big fleeces with no real shade.
The Kerry Cliffs are nowhere near as famous as the Cliffs of Moher but boy did they deliver today.
Bronze Age stone circle in a boggy paddock in Co.Cork. It's pretty cool to just walk up and pat stones that were put there about 3000 years ago.
I have really spent a lot more of this Irish trip with graveyard dirt under my fingernails than I expected 😂 I've been on a mini crusade to roll back decades of moss and grass on the oldest gravestones of my paternal ancestors.
Two housemartins in flight, attending to important nest business under the eaves.
