107 moths of 43 species a couple of days ago, including this Vagrant Piercer, new for the year, in the morning dew. #mothsmatter #teammoth
Cosmopolitan? I don't mind if I do! Out of 106 moths and 45 species the Cosmopolitan was the only new for the year last night, with a Spectacled Berry Fly the cutest of the by-catches. #teammoth #mothsmatter
Nearly there, in terms of both the distance and her fund-raising target. If you have a couple of pounds/dollars/Euros/anything you could chip in it would be appreciated. Her fundraising page can be found at giving.gg and search for "Alice", or check out her Instagram bio for the link @aliceswimsgsy
A total of 200 moths of 78 species last night, including the first Jersey Tiger of the year and a lovely Goat. #teammoth #mothsmatter
A little windy last night, so only 58 moths of 33 species in the trap but these did include this beautiful Swallow-tailed moth. #teammoth #mothsmatter
My 13-year-old daughter's self-organised fundraising challenge: swimming a marathon distance in the sea over 30 days (1.4km a day) for Paws For Support, a Guernsey charity that trains dogs to help improve people's lives. If you would like to support: tinyurl.com/4d77xwd7
A total of 167 moths of 60 species last night, with 13 new for the year, including the weirdly named Lackey, literally named White-triangle Slender and unnecessarily verbose named Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing. #teammoth #mothsmatter
Happy Father’s Day, all those who commiserate. Gift from a daughter, designed by herself and based on four of my favourite moths. Any guesses which ones they are? #mothsmatter #teammoth
A bumper night of 179 moths, 69 species, including two Privet Hawk-moths, two Pine Hawk-moths and eight Poplar Hawk-moths. #teammoth #mothsmatter #crowdpleasers
Warmer days mean Hummingbird Hawk-moth visits. A slow motion video shows just how long its proboscis is relative to its body, and how it curls up between flowers. Great example of convergent evolution. #teammoth #mothsmatter
Calmer weather means more moths - 127 of 45 species last night, with five new for the year, including the very Goth-like Oak Nycteoline. #mothsmatter #teammoth
Drizzly mist and fairly strong winds but still a decent night of 85 moths, 31 species, one new for the year, a Buff Footman, which sounds like it has just stepped out of a Jilly Cooper novel. #mothsmatter #teammoth
Last night had 132 moths of 53 species in and around the trap; prettiest definitely the Orache and the flashiest the Common Emerald
Love of the Common People in the moth trap last night. Normally there’s two or three “Common”s, but last night was ten, amongst 46 total species within 122 moths there was the Common Footman, Grass-veneer, Lutestring, Marble, Pug, Common Swift, Wainscot, Wave and White Wave. #teammoth #mothsmatter
Poplar Hawk-moth undergoes its final flight checks before taking off. #teammoth #mothsmatter
Decent night, of 156 moths of 65 species but this was the stand out for utter cuteness, a Puss Moth. #teammoth #permaculturegarden #biodiversity #mothsmatter
The most interesting thing in the moth trap last night was a wasp - an Enicospilus wasp to be precise. The larvae of these wasps feed on moth caterpillars, and the adults, like most moths, are nocturnal. The weird and wonderful, invisible world happening in our front garden…
A box full of moths this morning; 156 moths and 64 species, of which ten were new for the year, including a Common Yellow Conch and a Crescent Bell. #teammoth #mothsmatter
Green Day: temperatures and moth counts both rising. Last night we had 38 species and a total of 91 moths including three shades of green - a Green Silver-lines, a Light Emerald, a Green Pug, and a Hawthorn Shieldbug for good measure. #mothsmatter #teammoth #biodiversity
Toadflax or Foxglove? Apps seem to be evenly divided as to whether this could be a Toadflax Pug or a Foxglove Pug. The more I’ve read, the more confused I’ve become. Any thoughts? #teammoth #mothsmatter
Today was Poplar Hawk Moth day in the trap - first time this year and three in one night. #teammoth #mothsmatter
A Willow Beauty popped in the house to see us today #teammoth #mothsmatter
Moths come with some brilliant names, like the Least Black Arches or the Water Carpet, but when I discovered a Flame Shoulder in the trap I was expecting something a little more…flame-y 🤷♂️ #teammoth #permaculturegarden #biodiversity #greenliving #mothsmatter
Huge array of different moths in the trap this morning, here’s just a flavour. So many new for this year that our official recorder (my 10 year old) had to abbreviate “new species”. #teammoth #permaculturegarden #biodiversity #greenliving
Pick of the moth trap this morning were a Peppered moth and a Silver Y - a new species for me and, when I uploaded it, for iRecord it would appear.
A lovely Emperor moth in the trap this morning - a first time for 2026, as well as three other species new for this year. She laid eggs on the egg box and so it is now tucked into a hawthorn hedge to feed the youngsters. #teammoth
Pick of the moth trap today was this hook tip - I’m thinking Watsonalla uncinula but I’m not certain. #teammoth
The sloe gin, sloe brandy and sloe port is starting the year well I see…
