TIL that San Francisco's Coit Tower is named for a genderqueer socialite of the late 1800s.

Although Martha had done her best to turn her daughter into a traditional southern belle, Lillie continued to be contemptuous of conformity. She has been described as one of the most eccentric personalities of her time. She once arranged a middleweight boxing match in her hotel room. A New York newspaper reported the incident:

"Mrs. Lillie Coit has broken through another social tradition by having a slugging match in her drawing room. Blood flowed freely. The winning Sighter asked her if he should finish off his opponent and she turned her thumbs down. Has the wealthy woman set an example, which other women will follow? This is a staggering shock to conservative New York. But but did not ruffle San Francisco one bit. They are used to her.”

Lillie Coit played poker, smoked cigars, polished off bottles of bourbon and wore trousers long before it was socially acceptable for women to do so. On one occasion, she attended a meeting of San Francisco’s all-male Bohemian Club disguised as a gentleman. Although Coit was the originator of a new way of life for women, San Francisco society accepted her and her oddities. “This was because she was so picturesque that she was able to violate the many norms of behavior without suffering a loss of reputation,” wrote a Boston Globe reporter.

“Isn’t it lovely? There’s no other neighborhood in the city where it’s so easy to share space with all the other kinds of animals.”

“I, ah, I see that.” I looked across the street at a nightclub I could only refer to as /imposing,/ a word I wouldn’t normally associate with such an establishment. But the largest of its three front doors rolled up rather than opened inward, and it stood a good four times my height. /Sliding Scale Burlesque Club,/ the sign read. “That’s a mixed-size, ah, gentlemen’s club?”

“Open to all sexes. Lovely dancers on multiple stages, private rooms, strong drinks, and a better kitchen than a place like that honestly needs.” She laughed.

“Private...” I felt my ears flush. “For mixed sizes. How can, ah...” I cleared my throat.

Miss Bancroft walked up onto the front stoop of an unmarked building. “You’ll just have to visit some time and find out, Mr. Hornsby.” She unlocked the door and winked.

I’m quite sure the blush in my ears spread to most of the upper half of my body. I hurried inside, barely remembering to hold the door open for her.

Leaning forward in her lifeguard chair, Nixie squinted at the two swimmers---if you could call that swimming---about fifty yards out. Was one of them in trouble? Maybe not. She swept her gaze around the rest of the beach, then back at them.

"Why do you have boobs?"

Nixie made a soft choking noise and stared down at the questioner, open-mouthed.

I did not get much writing done at the coffee shop, so I could have chosen to go on to a brewery or library or some place to keep trying, or I could choose delicious tiki-shaped violence instead.

A hurricane cocktail, which is dark red, served in a tall Collins glass and garnished with a cherry that’s been speared by a broken paper umbrella (the winds broke it, get it?).

Well, Emacs in a terminal looks surprisingly good on the iPad—I'll have to test it out in the field to see if it's usable in practice. It'd be a nice, if nerdy, "writing deck" setup that still lets me keep using my preferred editor.
