"Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding." I paraphrase this highly applicable little pearl of wisdom all the time but today I needed the actual quote so I had to dig it up. Turns out I had been misattributing it to Rumi, but it is actually Kahlil Gibran. 🙏

But suppressed histories live on in today's fights for justice. Black and Indigenous communities are still demanding America face up to it's history. The 250th anniversary gifted us several projects elevating this politic like dayonemovement.org America would be wise to heed their call. 6/

TIL Leon Trotsky had very strong feelings about art and it's role in revolutionary society: "What I want painting to renounce is its absolutism and re-establish its organic link with architecture and sculpture..." until then art galleries will merely be "concentration camps for colours and beauty"🌈

In 1908 Trotsky wrote the following prophetic lines: "You see, visiting art exhibitions is a terrible act of violence that we perpetrate on ourselves. This way of experiencing artistic pleasure expresses a terrible barracks-capitalist barbarism [...] Let's take a landscape, for example. What is it? A piece of nature, arbitrarily amputated, that has been framed and hung on a wall. Between these elements, nature, the canvas, the frame and the wall, a purely mechanical relation exists: the picture cannot be infinite, for tradition and practical considerations have condemned it to be square. So that it should not crease or buckle, it is framed, and so that it should not lie on the floor, people hammer a nail in a wall, fix a cord onto it, and hang up the picture by this cord. Then, when all the walls are covered in pictures, sometimes arranged in two or three rows, people call this an art gallery or exhibition. And then we are forced to swallow all this in one gulp: landscapes, genre scenes, frames, cord and nails...

"But what I want painting to renounce is its absolutism and re-establish its organic link with architecture and sculpture, from which it has long been detached. This separation did not happen by accident, oh no! From that time, painting has undertaken a very long and instructive journey. It has conquered landscape, has become inwardly mobile and intimate, and has developed an astounding technique. But now, enriched with all thee gifts, it must go back to its mother's bosom, architecture... I want paintings to be connected not by cords but by their artistic significance to walls or to a cupola, to the purpose of a building, to the character of a room...and not hanging like a hat on a hat stand. Picture galleries, those concentration camps for colours and beauty, serve but as a monstrous appendage to our colourless and unsightly daily reality." Sure Trump has unleashed a racist assault to try and erase America's true diversity and push a white nationalist revisionist history. But here I sit in an SFO terminal named after gay rights pioneer Harvey Milk checking out the museum exhibit on Women of Afrofuturism. Hah! Take that MAGA bigots! 🥳

An Italian woman who heard about our event drove an hour to join us and was moved to tears as we all joined in to sing Bella Ciao with her in Italian. *It was the first time singing in Italian for most of us so it is possible she was crying because our pronunciation was so bad 😬 #PastaLiberaTutti

SFO's cool water-filling stations are obviously free. But just a few hundred miles away in the Central Valley there are whole communities who have to buy their drinking water because of pollution from Big Ag and Oil. How long will we keep tolerating Eco-Apartheid in the world's 4th largest economy?

Fee and dividend is definitely one way to do it. I'm a believer in building the coalition to win whatever we can but my preferred models of just transition go beyond emissions to address our whole economic model, like @cjaourpower.bsky.social's framework: climatejusticealliance.org/just-transit...

A strategy Framework for Just Transition that shows 6 meta-strategies for transition from our current Extractive Economy to a Living Economy.
The meta-strategies are captured in the arrows:
- Stop the Bad
- Build the new
- Change the Rules
- Divest ("starve & stop") from their Power
- Invest ("feed & grow") in Our Power

The 6th meta-strategy is not listed but is "Change the Story" which the entire articulation and organizing around this model is doing.
