Boston City Councilor for District 1: Charlestown, East Boston, North End & Wharf District. Public servant, a proud product of BPS, forever pushing the arc. 🌞
We had a great morning connecting with East Boston residents and various city departments at Mayor Wu’s Coffee Hour! ☀️☕ Thank you to everyone who came out and all who helped organize.
The release of the Army Corps of Engineers' Draft Coastal Storm Risk Management Feasibility Study is a major milestone toward making the investments needed to protect Boston's residents, neighborhoods, and critical infrastructure from sea level rise and coastal storms.
"Communities like East Boston, Charlestown, the North End and the downtown waterfront are on the front lines," said Councilor Gabriela Coletta Zapata. "Every resident deserves to know that their home and livelihood are worth protecting."
My statement regarding the Brigham and Women’s Hospital nurse strike.
“At the time, we saw, particularly in Charlestown, that there was a breakdown in conversations around difficult topics including race and equity and diversity and inclusion,” Coletta Zapata said. “So, we wanted a space for the youth to lead and to hold adults accountable.”
Thank you to the Parks Dept for the upgrades to the East Boston Memorial Tennis Courts 🎾 I’m grateful to members of the community who advocated in partnership with us to revitalize this vital piece of open space. We’re thrilled to see it become a reality for neighbors to enjoy these summer months!
Today we commemorate Juneteenth, a day of liberation, resilience, and freedom. On June 19, 1865, General Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to issue Order No. 3, finally enforcing the emancipation of enslaved people more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Happy Bunker Hill Day! ❤️🤍💙 Today we honor the courage and sacrifice of those who fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill, and reflect on the enduring spirit that continues to define Charlestown generation after generation.
support critical infrastructure, & address community needs. I'm proud to share the investments we've secured for the District. Thank you to Ways & Means Chair Ben Weber for his leadership throughout the budget process. For a comprehensive list of investments visit: boston.gov/departments/budget
Last week, the Boston City Council voted on Boston’s FY27 Operating Budget, which funds the essential services residents rely on every day. Throughout this process, we remained committed to fiscal responsibility while advancing investments that restore youth and senior programming, 1/
I strongly denounce the recent removal of quotes referencing slavery and the role of immigrants in the American Revolution from interpretive panels at the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown. I have reached out to the National Park Service to request additional information regarding this decision.
My statement on the FYF27 BPS Budget and Capital Budget votes.
Eid Mubarak to all celebrating Eid al-Adha! 🌙✨ Wishing our Muslim neighbors a joyful holiday filled with peace, reflection, generosity & time with loved ones. May this celebration bring blessings, strengthen community, and remind us of the values of compassion, sacrifice, and care for one another.
🍝🍅 It’s coming back… Sagra del Sugo: The Sauce Festival returns soon! And yes, we’re reopening the age-old debate: sauce or gravy? (Choose wisely 👀)
🏳️⚧️🌈✨ Excited to announce the 4th Annual North End Pride Celebration on Wednesday, June 3rd at 5:30 PM at the North End Branch Library. Join us for a celebration of love in honor of our LGBTQ+ neighbors. All are welcome to join!
The East Boston Social Centers has created a donation link to support families displaced with 100% of contributions going directly to those affected. We are not accepting material donations and are focused on raising funds to provide families with dignity and flexibility. 🔗 bit.ly/Eastie_Fire
Grateful to join the Charlestown High School 8th grade civics class for their Civics Action Projects. We had great conversations about the roles each of us can play in shaping our communities. The future of civic engagement is bright! Huge thank you to our amazing CHS educators for organizing.
⚾️ Kicked off Charlestown Little League and East Boston Little League season! ⛵️Happy Opening Day from Piers Park Sailing Center!
We had a fun filled busy Saturday in District 1 despite the clouds and rain 🌦️ 🧹 Love Your Block was a hit! Thanks to all the neighbors who joined efforts to beautify our streets and parks.
Proud to stand with the GBLC this International Workers Day, alongside airport workers fighting for safe working conditions & dignity. We’re demanding that one job be enough. I’ll always stand with workers as they push for justice especially in the face of hostile, regressive federal conditions.
Thank you Councilor Weber, Councilor Santana and Thomas Pelkey for your partnership and collaboration.
No resident should be afraid to report unsafe living conditions or assert their rights for fear of retaliation or displacement. It’s on us as a City to ensure strong protections are in place, and I look forward to working to address gaps and advance meaningful solutions.
I introduced an ordinance to strengthen tenant protections during rental inspection code violations, including increased penalties for landlords found in violation. We are facing a historic housing shortage with rising rents & limited supply creating an imbalance of power between landlords & tenants
A special thank you to the Charlestown YMCA for their partnership and commitment! And a big shoutout to our youth for leading the conversation.
A beautiful night relaunching Charlestown in Solidarity: Race and Equity Dialogues ✨ It’s been an honor to take part in these authentic conversations, foster community, and reflect. Looking forward to continuing these discussions every month on the last Thursday at 5:30PM at Peace Park.
This petition creates a targeted, locally controlled revenue stream to support affordable housing while delivering long-overdue tax relief for seniors. Thank you to the sponsors Councilors Santana, Louijeune & Durkan for their leadership. Special thank you to State Senator Edwards for her leadership
As Chair of the Government Operations Committee, I led the passage of a Home Rule Petition advancing Real Estate Transfer Fees and expanding Senior Property Tax Relief. Boston is facing a housing emergency driven by rising costs, limited supply, and outdated tools that no longer meet the moment.
#OneBostonDay is a time to reflect on the tragedy of April 15, 2013, while also honoring the resilience, strength, & generosity of Boston & its people. It serves as a powerful reminder of our ability to come together, care for one another, & turn a day of heartbreak into one of healing & community.
