How important is Danny's sexuality and can you tell us more about how that links to "Rebecca"?
Mrs. Danvers could be read as romantically obsessed with a dead woman and that fixation certainly drives her every action in the novel. I wanted to make my Mrs. Danvers's sexuality just part of who she is so I've set the story in the present and you see how she develops her fateful obsession.
It's got humour, a pulp sensibility as well as strands of the gothic novel, but what was the overall tone and atmosphere you wanted to achieve in I Am Danvers?
I grew up loving melodrama and pulp, so focused on creating a lot of contrast between the hardscrabble, rather desperate world that Danny inhabits and the insular world of wealth she is introduced to. Once she arrives in California, she is thrust into a literal fantasy world but soon realises that under the surface is decay and corruption.

Kate Kaminski's I Am Danvers is a wildly entertaining and extremely thoughtful novel, and the author does an excellent job of balancing both heartening and heartbreaking moments. Danny is easy to like in the way she notices vulnerability even while lying to survive. I am always fully behind a character who is ready to protect an abandoned parrot from being released outdoors.

Her performance was sexy psychopath from a cheesy nineties thriller. But she wasn't wrong. I had shown only a ready willingness to let her manipulate me. I said her bossing me around was my job description after all, and she said, Exactly, that's what I mean! You get it.
And that was how I wound up wearing Rose Patten's top, and her gold necklace, to the big party.

I stepped onto the platform, and together we coaxed the dress up over her hips. It didn't split, but it was plenty snug. We were close enough to each other that I could smell her sweat, sharp and sweet. The purple dress was a strange choice for an audition, but I hoped Vernon would be wrong. I was rooting for Sugar Callahan.

Over the years I've learned some things about the Art that is spelled with a capital A, not the assembly line, small-a art of the sort they hang on the walls of this crap hotel. The most important thing to remember is that capital-A Art is worth what somebody is willing to pay for it, and some people will go to great lengths to own it.

Unscrupulous people have been known to sell forgeries of their Art in order to make money on it while also hoarding the real thing. A strange fetish, those subterranean locked rooms with their Warhol or their O'Keeffe or their Rembrandt. Audience of one.

The bottom line is that capital-A Art is only for the people who can afford it, the ones who need somebody like me to run things for them, make sure their flowers are fresh, their floors so clean they could eat off them, their refrigerator arranged in ordered rows. Whatever their kink,
I'm their girl.
