HX went out of their way to add local flavor to our expedition and help boost the local economy. Two of the three chefs on board were from Greenland, we had a member of the Inuit people on board as a storyteller for the entire trip, and here a family traveled from Maniitsoq to tell us how they live
Our final stop before returning to Nuuk was in Evigjedsfjord for cruises and kayaking to observe the glaciers and wildlife.
I consider myself a casual birder. I have a book where check off birds I’ve seen, but I don’t travel just to collect new sightings. On this trip I added Northern Fulmers, Icelandic Gulls, Snow Buntings, Kittiwakes and Black Guillemots.
Magnus explains what is known of the graphic on the 4th deck of our expedition ship. First described in an 1860 book of spells titled “The book of Secrets” it was described as a way to find your way home. It is similar to a graphic that occurs in Italian spell books from the 1400’s.
I sent this to the grandkids and some other family while we were still in Greenland as a game. Can you find the house?
Zodiac cruising at Eqip Sermia, a calving glacier about 80km north of Ilulissat.
Many walked across the mud flat in the fog to view the whale skeleton, but how many returned?
More sled dogs than people in many of the settlements. Most were chained to the ground but not this little guy.
Walk from the museum in Ilulissat to the nearby ice fjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The museum had some very cool exhibits including a virtual reality tour of the ice coring operations in north east Greenland.
Our expedition vessel is really well designed and is the sister ship of the one we used to explore Alaska two years ago. The crew had to maneuver around the constantly moving ice to allow us to disembark and re-embark on the zodiacs.
Iceland was the appetizer for the real purpose of our trip which was to visit and experience Greenland before the current U.S. regime tries to screw it up. We flew to Nuuk where we boarded our expedition ship for 10 days up the west coast.
