They asked me how my visit was, so I told them.

I have been bringing my dog to this clinic for 7 years; while the care we have received has been excellent and I have no complaints about this, I do have profound concerns about pricing practices from my most recent visit.

My dog takes a maintenance dose of Gabapentin, which we have delivered via your pharmacy mail order service. The cost is $11.76 for a 90-day supply (180 capsules). This works out to $0.13 per pill. However, a two-week supply (28 capsules) of this same drug purchased directly from the clinic yesterday cost me $20.98, which works out to $0.75 per pill: a staggering markup of over 600%. When I asked the vet tech about this price difference, she merely shrugged dismissively and said “I don’t set the prices;” of course I understand this, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want an explanation for a cost differential of this magnitude.

On my invoice there is a line-item charge of $11.40 for “Medical Waste Disposal,” which I can only assume refers to the leftover stool sample that was provided for intestinal screening. Since I have already been charged $81.40 for this procedure, it astonishes me that I would incur an extra fee for you to throw my dog’s poop in the trash, which is something I do several times a day for nothing. I suspect this fee is nothing new and I have been paying it for years without question, but due to current personal circumstances I am obliged to account for every dollar.

I know veterinary care is expensive and rightly so: veterinarians and vet techs work hard and perform invaluable services. However, sneaky upcharges like these seem unreasonable when I am already paying hundreds of dollars for my dog’s care. In the past 7 years I have never had a bad experience with the clinic, the pet hotel, or any of your staff and I have not hesitated to recommend -- whole-heartedly to anyone I knew looking for veterinary services; unfortunately, based on yesterday’s visit, my praise of this clinic will no longer be so unconditional.

What we could have had.

I worked at Smithsonian, specifically raising money for 250th. What I want people to know is we secured millions of private philanthropy to host a month long Folklife Festival on the mall, “The Festival of Festivals.” Was going to feature well known festivals, think Burning Man, Farm Aid, Grand Ole Oprey etc. as well as smaller local and regional festivals from across the U.S. and territories. Goal was to feature truly the best and most beautiful creative expression in music, dance, arts and craft traditions, food, community etc. Can’t name names but plan was to have headliners every night for free concerts.... Think the types of names who might be affiliated with the aforementioned large festivals. Stars were willing to perform because was under banner of Smithsonian. It had to all be scrapped because the administration would not release permits to host on the mall. The money went elsewhere, but our nation was robbed of what would have been a once in a generation cultural moment.

My car got broken into! They smashed the passenger side window with a brick (helpfully left on the back seat) but didn't take anything. My guess is they wanted to steal it but were thwarted when they saw it was a stick 🤣 (standard transmission = theft deterrent device)
