I recently visited the remote town of Stehekin to see flood damage firsthand and hear from impacted residents at a community meeting. The only way to get to Stehekin is via boat, plane, or on foot. My son Jack and I decided to hike in on the Chelan Lakeshore Trail.

Today, Washington state joins with Leno's family, friends, and community in celebrating his life. He will be remembered as a fighter for justice, a trailblazer in advocating for immigrants, and someone who changed many lives with his activism, here in Washington state and around the world.

WHEREAS, at 14 years old, Magdaleno Rose-Avila and his father joined what he considered his
first agricultural strike, walking off the job for better wages, and he would later become an organizer for
the United Farm Workers of America where he led a 120-mile march from Pueblo to Denver; and
WHEREAS, in 1985, Leno started a movement with Sister Helen Prejean called Moratorium
2000 that helped elevate the idea of a moratorium on the death penalty; and
WHEREAS, in 1996, Leno founded Homies Unidos to help gang members and at-risk youth gain
life skills, going into debt and using up his pension fund to support the work; and
WHEREAS, Leno served as the Peace Corps Country Director in Nicaragua, Guatemala,
Paraguay, and Micronesia, supporting the humanitarian work of hundreds of volunteers; and
WHEREAS, Leno became executive director of the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project in 2003,
strengthening its work supporting individuals in immigration legal matters, and during that time, received
Seattle's Distinguished Citizen Award for Human Rights; and
WHEREAS, Leno was unanimously confirmed by the Seattle City Council as the first director of
Seattle's Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs in 2012, with the goal of making Seattle the friendliest
city for immigrants and refugees; and
WHEREAS, Leno changed countless lives through his activism and his work as a writer, poet
and speaker, and that legacy will live on; and
WHEREAS, Washington state will continue to be guided by Leno's gift to show up in
community and lift up important values like inclusivity and mutual respect;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Ferguson, governor of the state of Washington, do hereby proclaim
July11, 2026, as
Magdaleno Rose-Avila Day
in Washington, and I urge all people in our state to join me in remembering Leno.

It's an honor to be governor of a state where we see this kind of engagement from officials and support from the community in response to the Chelan Hills Fire in Douglas County. I was in Chelan this week for a briefing, and I was told that the coordination is excellent.

41 cities applied to host World Cup games. 32 advanced to the next selection round, 23 made a short list, 16 cities across three countries were selected. And, no surprise to anyone who knows our city, Seattle was ranked the Number 1 stadium experience by The Athletic’s reporters covering the games.
