Really loved The List Of Suspicious Things by Jennie Godfrey, a novel of friendship, grief, trauma, and joy set against the Yorkshire Ripper murders of the 1970s, as two almost-teens decide to investigate all the suspicious activity in their town in hopes of discovering the ripper’s identity.

One of my favorite students surprised me with an email this morning. Apparently, she collected quotes from me all year in a detailed document. 😂 For context on the first one, I was dressed as Joy from the Pixar movie Inside Out, and it was Halloween. I will let the others live without context.

I started writing scenes for a Muppet Macbeth with David Tennant. It's titled: Something Wacky This Way Comes, A Muppet Macbeth. Favorite thing I've ever written. @lancerubinparty.bsky.social made me cut almost all of it out of the MG book I tried to insert it into. 😂

“Is this a dagger which I see before me, the handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee,” he says with his Scottish accent booming. He reaches toward the rows of seats in front of him where Kermit is sitting with an orange-haired Muppet who is wearing glasses and holding a clipboard. There is no dagger in sight. “I have thee not, and yet I see thee still. Art thou not, fatal vision –”
“Don’t worry, David, we’ll have that floating dagger by next rehearsal,” Kermit says. “Scooter, check in on Bunsen and Beaker. See how the floating dagger is coming.”
“Sure thing, boss,” orange-haired Scooter says nodding. As he takes a note on his clipboard a dagger embeds itself in the seat between them with a loud THWANGGGGG! Kermit looks at it nervously, and Scooter nods appreciatively. “Looks like they’re still working on it.”

Ajay Anthonipillai has a million-dollar problem. He’s always lived his life dutifully following the rules set by his Tamil parents. However, moving to a new school gives Ajay a new rule to follow: Get on seventh-grade all-star Jacob Underson's good side.

Thirteen-year-old Growls (aka Shaun) is an aspiring (awful) rapper who hopes to enter this year's Raptology competition with his best friend, Shanks (aka Zachariah). After all, what better way to land his crush (Tanisha) and get the respect he finally deserves than winning the contest and going viral.
But when a livestream practice goes epically wrong, Growls becomes the laughingstock of his school. Even worse, Shanks has gone MIA, leaving him terribly alone.
But when Growls meets the new girl on the block (Siobhan), things no longer seem so terrible after all. And maybe, just maybe, he still has a shot at winning that Raptology competition too.

We also loved a story that takes place quite close to our school on Cape Cod, The Labors of Hercules Beal by Gary D. Schmidt.

Herc Beal knows who he's named after--a mythical hero--but he's no superhero. He's the smallest kid in his class. So when his teacher at his new middle school gives him the assignment of duplicating the mythical Hercules' amazing feats in real life, he's skeptical. After all, there are no Nemean Lions on Cape Cod and not a single Hydra in sight.
Missing his parents terribly and wishing his older brother wasn't working all the time, Herc figures out how to take his first steps along the road that the great Hercules himself once walked. Soon, new friends, human and animal, are helping him. And though his mythical role model performed his twelve labors by himself, Herc begins to see that he may not have to go it alone.

Honestly, I didn't want to read a book about school gun violence, but @lancerubinparty.bsky.social forced it on me, and I'm now so glad that he did. Which brings me to his amazing book, which is also on the list: Crying Laughing 😆😢😂

Winnie Friedman has been waiting for the world to catch on to what she already knows: she's hilarious. It might be a long wait, though. After bombing a stand-up set at her own bat mitzvah, Winnie has kept her jokes to herself. Well, to herself and her dad, a former comedian and her inspiration.
Just when Winnie's ready to say yes to comedy again, her father reveals that he's been diagnosed with ALS. That is . . . not funny. Her dad's still making jokes, though, which feels like a good thing. Maybe finding a way to laugh is exactly what will help see Winnie through all the bad news, bad dates, and bad performances confronting her.

This year for incoming 8th graders our summer reading theme is “I’m Dealing with It,” or finding ways to adjust during difficult times. And we especially wanted books that had a light touch. Simon Sort Of Says @erinbowbooks.bsky.social was the inspiration and north star for the list.

Simon O'Keeffe's biggest claim to fame should be the time his dad accidentally gave a squirrel a holy sacrament. Or maybe the alpaca disaster that went viral on YouTube. But the story the whole world wants to tell about Simon is the one he'd do anything to forget, the one starring Simon as a famous survivor of gun violence at school.
Two years after the infamous event, twelve-year-old Simon and his family move to the National Quiet Zone, the only place in America where the internet is banned. Instead of talking about Simon, the astronomers who flock to the area are busy listening for signs of life in space. And when Simon makes a friend who's determined to give the scientists what they're looking for, he'll finally have the chance to spin a new story for the world to tell.

Anyone reading anything good? I’m about half through Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries, a novel by Heather Fawcett. I love a stubborn anthropologist accompanied by a fae prince in exile studying “the hidden folk,” and getting in all kinds of trouble.

Just listened to an interview with Katie Dippold, creator of Widow's Bay (a horror comedy on Apple), and learned she was the viral Babadook girl with the wrong vibe for her friend's Halloween party in 2016. TBH says everything I need to know about why I'm loving Widow's Bay so far.

Watched a movie this morning that I bought ten years ago, and have been meaning to watch since: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Beautiful animation. Fun and funny. I am a sucker for "small" time travel stories about personal relationships, and avoid having the fate of the universe at stake.

Found this movie I really liked today with Peter Dinklage, Marissa Tomei, and Anne Hathaway in the leads with a great supporting cast. It was not the romance I expected. Messy and fun and lovely. Director Rebecca Miller is a gift.
