Trying to be kind. Church and old buildings explorer; love words, cricket, history, theatre, books, art, music, nature, birds, manuscripts. 😊 Only here for gentle stuff.
St Cuthbert’s chapel, Inner Farne Island. Please visit if you can. Extraordinary 🕯️
Wonderful birds on the Farne Islands today; a joyful experience!
The simple chapel on Inner Farne. I felt Cuthbert’s closeness when I was inside. The atmosphere inside was overwhelming. A real moment of peace and joy 😊
The Wombles of Inner Farne today, the beautiful, adorable puffins who live underground, overground, in the air and in the sea. We meanwhile plod about on the earth’s crust. But, by visiting these wonderful creatures, my heart is uplifted as joy passed through my world for a few precious hours… ☺️
The delightful space within Hexham Abbey, where volunteers bustle about and visitors seem deeply fascinated, including a young lad I watched as I gazed about me. In spite of the dark stone, the Abbey today (does it every day?) had a lively, happy atmosphere. Not gloomy or austere.
A wonderful door on the first floor of Hexham Abbey, once leading - I understand - to the monks’ dormitories. I was able to peep through the keyhole (see below) 🤨😬
Heavenfield today with an obligatory but welcome information board. The church is hidden in the group of trees.
St Oswald’s church overlooking the field of battle, the wonderful and historic Heavenfield. By Hadrian’s wall and a scene of great beauty. I attach a link to today’s podcast episode that includes a visit to Hexham Abbey. 🤓 www.buzzsprout.com/2412300/epis...
Can this view even exist? Pray how can this world be so beautiful? I was driving to the outskirts of Hexham today, as one does on a Sunday afternoon, and this was the view close to the finish line. 🌝
Dedication stone, St Paul’s, Jarrow. Still there. A familiar daily sight to our dear friend Bede, the Venerable Bede 😁 A literary episode this evening… all welcome (no adverts or fee) www.buzzsprout.com/2412300/epis...
Pretty and old Queen Camel, Somerset. The shire that tucked King Alfred in an islandish fold of its beautiful land to keep him safe from his Norse enemies…
Lovely little dude of the squirreledge sort. Long white bib popped on for his meal.. 😊
And now my son from many a year back, wondering if he should press the bell… 🔔☺️
Delighted to see the Abbey supporting ‘Swifts over Sherborne’. ☺️
Wonderful poster for Sherborne’s 1929 Pack Monday fair. A cart sucker, anyone?
Hand-made buttons from Dorset, in the Sherborne museum. Once fingers made all things in a more self-sufficient age of cottage industries.
If you want to live a quiet life, in a cute, old house in one of the most ancient spots in Sherborne, you could do worse than buy a cottage in Finger Lane. A public right of way battled over many centuries ago: the monks wanting to enclose their lands; the townsfolk wanting access to the wells.
