This actually *IS* a distraction: grand jury testimony is normally sealed, and they know damn well no judge is going to unseal it without a compelling reason. This is a transparent ploy to make the excuse, "Hey, we tried, but some liberal judge wouldn't let us (he's probably a groomer)."

Weird that this reply got me blocked. The point of 2001, as explained in 2010 at least, was that HAL was given conflicting orders ("serve the crew" and "deceive the crew"), and it decided that the way to accomplish both was to murder the crew. Arthur C Clarke anticipated this exact problem.
