The Gutless Home Chef
@gutless
A doc took my cancerous tum but I still cook, eat, and post vids/pics of yummy noms. Canadian 🇨🇦. One wife, one kid, one doggo. New to knitting 🧶 and nails 💅. Obsessed with movies, books, and games. This is a safe space for 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️!
#5SecondReview: God's Junk Drawer Weird world conjurer Clines set this story a strange valley inhabited by aliens, robots, dinosaurs, neanderthals, feral cats, strange artifacts, and modern humans. It's a bit let's-throw-shit-at-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks, but the ideas mostly come together.
#5SecondReview: After the Fall The Earth is now run by hippo-sized aliens who keep the few remaining humans as pets/slaves. Two such pets are in the keeping of a well-meaning but bumbling overlord. Has a bit of terrifying whimsy similar to Fantastic Planet. Fun read, with surprising warmth.
#5SecondReview: Criminal Record (S1&2) This moody British procedural is hyper-focused on the tense push/pull between its two leads, Jumbo and Capaldi. They're trapped in a world of grey that's slowly crushing their souls, carving both their mugs into iconic resting bitch faces in the process.
#5SecondReview: Star City Everything I wanted that the last couple of seasons of For All Mankind lacked. Fantastic alt history musings. Daring space exploration. Authentic political and personal drama. And a cast of truly great actors, several of which are due awards consideration. Prestige sci-fi.
#5SecondReview: The Dog Stars Poetic, melancholic, literary post-apocalypse storytelling. A bit like McCarthy's The Road, but also a little gentler. Loved the characters and their authentic relationships with each other. The reflections on life and what we get out of it, what makes it worth living.
You guys, we did it! Worst air quality in the whole world! My backyard view is downright otherworldly…
My fellow knitters, I unironically nailed this one. And I learned some new stuff! First time using more than one colour, first time making a pom-pom, and those vertical stripes were crocheted! Super excited to give it to my daughter for the winter. 🥰🧶
My adorable wife bought me the official Beatles knitting book. 🥰 I can’t wait to try one of these patterns. Some of my favourites from my first leaf-through…
This BEAST of a moth kept banging into our window last night. Size of a small plate. Absolute king of the night.
#5SecondReview: The Invite One of the best movies of the year so far. I’d never have put Rogen, Wilde, Cruz, and Norton together, but they’re perfect in their roles as two couples spending an evening talking, imbibing, fighting, and flirting. Super funny, with some meaningful insights. Recommend.
Made a chef’s salad for the first time in forever. Perfect combination of protein, greens, and savoury flavours. Can’t wait to tuck in! 😋
#5SecondReview: The Return Nolan Odyssey prep continues. This one focuses on the poem’s latter events. No gods, no monsters. All epicness stripped away. Just a broken man trying to reclaim his wife and home. Feels like a play, not a film. Fiennes is great, but I’m not sure what it accomplishes.
#5SecondReview: Paranormal Activity (the play) Front row centre, and the spooky bits were startling AF. Loud noises, creepy shadows, things moving, people disappearing. Fantastic set design and clever lighting making it all possible. And a surprising amount of comic relief, too. Great scary fun!
#5SecondReview: Odyssey The final entry in Fry’s four-book cycle on Greek mythology. Odysseus’ entire post-Trojan war saga is presented in the most accessible way, written and read by one of our great storytellers and entertainers, with scholarly footnotes where needed. Fry’s reading is terrific.
Three months in the making, my LotR-themed Undying Lands throw (Tanis Gray) is complete! 🌿🧶 Knit in a super soft alpaca, it taught me so much. Made LOADS of mistakes through the first leafy repeats, but I think it turned out fine. 🥰 And all glory to washing and blocking. Elven magic is real.🧝♀️
#5SecondReview: Troy, by Stephen Fry Decided to bone up on Homer before watching Nolan's new film by listening to Fry's take on Iliad. It is stunning. Thrilling, funny, edifying, perfectly paced. A super accessible way to dig into Homer's epic poem. Recommend. Now on to Fry's version of Odyssey!
#5SecondReview: The Salvage Crew An AI installed on a lander tries to keep its crew alive on a savage planet. The audiobook is narrated by Nathan Fillion. Love him, but his delivery here is a bit too casual/mumble-y. It works well for most of his roles, but it’s not a great fit for book narration.
Spotted a jalopy—fully functional, lovingly maintained—in Hamilton this afternoon!
Made some steak salad with barbecued tenderloin, cukes, cherry tomatoes, red onions, and a homemade red wine vinaigrette. 😋
Harvested my basement oyster mushrooms and made mushroom steak! Looks like fried chicken, and with a sprinkle of lemon juice it tastes even better.😋
#5SecondReview: Disclosure Day Spielberg and Williams? Perfect comfort food for my generation. His trademark camera work, unsettling imagery, and creepy sounds are bolstered by strong performances from Firth and Blunt (her lengthy oner in the TV station is amazing). See it on the big screen, folks.
#5SecondReview: Fishflies This addition to the alternate universe Lemire has built for Essex County, Ontario takes a real-world Great Lakes nuisance (annual fishfly swarms) and turns it into a fantastical tale of friendship, punishment, and hope. Love how everything comes together in the final act.
Ron Swanson ain't feeling so good. Diabetes is getting worse, failing eyesight, back problems, and now maybe pancreatitis (he's getting bloodwork and an ultrasound). We spend more on his medical bills and meds than the rest of the family combined! If only Canada had universal healthcare for puppos.
You guys, it’s happening. My knit blanket has suddenly become all blankety! It’s keeping me warm even as I continue to make it! Other knitters foretold this magical moment when I began the project two months ago, and it hasn’t disappointed! 🥰🧶
#5SecondReview: Margo's Got Money Troubles Funny, stressful, poignant, progressive, excellent. Cleverly cast, with each actor used brilliantly, from the leads down to the supports and guests. The second-to-last episode is a hard watch, but in an earned, authentic way. Another notch for Apple TV+.
A little lacy blanket knitting in a car (wife at the wheel!) on the backroads of Southern Ontario on a rainy Saturday afternoon driving between small town yard sales. 🥰 🚗 🧶
#5SecondReview: The Mandalorian and Grogu Fan service for olds and youngs, great cameos, Mando action sequences that drip cool, loads of adorable baby Yoda bits, and lots of impressive in-camera effects. It’s not going to win any Oscars, but it’s an absolute treat for people who loved the show. 😊
Every year my wife buys our daughter tickets to see artists she loves for her birthday. For my part, I draw her a dumb little picture to announce it. She’s now 21. Too old for this little tradition?
