Today sees the start of the Royal Welsh Show! The Show was first held in 1904, at Aberystwyth. It was held annually at different locations, alternating between North and South Wales, until 1963 when its permanent site at Llanelwedd, near Builth Wells was established.

A recipe to relieve Cholera Morbus, from Mary Long’s recipe book dated 1828 (D361/F1/E/9). Cholera Morbus was the nineteenth century term for non-epidemic cholera and other stomach problems such as gastroenteritis.

This is a new accession to Gwent Archives which shows the sale of Nevill Hall and all the estates of the Marquiss of Abergavenny in September 1916.

John Gwin was insatiably curious, a keen fruit farmer, interested in scientific and medical developments, a devoted family man and an energetic churchwarden. All this is reflected in his commonplace book, in which he jotted down things he wanted to remember.

In October of 1914, Lady Llanagattock heard about the suffering of the wounded soldiers in France from Doctor Cropper of Mount Ballan, Chepstow, who later left for France himself, and immediately offered £50 towards an ambulance from Monmouthshire to France.

One item in our collection is the Newport Constabulary Police Order Book from 1909 to 1919. This gives an overview of various events that were happening in Newport throughout World War 1.

Today is Abergavenny Pride held at Abergavenny Castle. Throughout June there have been celebrations across South Wales to celebrate Pride.

In a new accession to the archives we have this invitation and programme for King George V’s coronation from #OnThisDay in 1911.

It’s #VolunteersWeek! Earlier this week we had our annual thank you event for our volunteers where we celebrated their achievements over the last year. Over the last year, our Access and Conservation volunteers have kindly volunteered over 600 hours.

When cleaning the Risca North Colliery records, we came across a register that recorded the pit ponies and drivers on each shift. While often referred to as ponies, the majority of animals used in collieries were horses (being over 14 hands high).
