A pencil draft of a take 2 on the accompanying renamon doodle, this time on the least expensive watercolour paper I own. You see much more of her legs in this one and i think the perspective will also be improved. Her ears are too big in this though I will be changing that before painting.
The drawing is very faint as it was mostly done with H9 pencil.. swapped to 4H since realizing I was pressing too hard lol hopefully the paint will be ok

I'm working on redrawing one of my fav renamon doodles from 2024? The perspective is jank due to not using a reference but i really like the dynamism and how the colour pencils came out. Bluesky is angry that i'm uploading two images so I'll try just this one for now hahaha

aand a couple more. You can see how the paper was not happy to be getting wet! I make/give these for free because they make for fun practice and I'm basic/no OCs. I don't think I'd feel good charging for 'em though I could prob ask for material costs?? idk. I'm usually down to doodle so whatevs

here is the nighthawks after the first application of paint. I had earlier decided I wouldn't use the masking fluid and that was a great call!! i'd purchased this paper like two years ago, and either it didn't like the humidity or it was meant for ink all along. Probably similar to 90g paper, the paint showed through the back. I'm sure masking fluid would've torn it all up.

but yea you can see what I meant before with how hard it is to tell what's just water-wet and what's dry. I kinda wish I'd used a different paper, though it was bigger than my fontaine stuff. live and learn

i'll often doodle the reference images to get an understanding of how things should be moving. here I used a lead holder instead of a standard pencil because the reference has very heavy shadows and it felt more appropriate. You can see the neck-tie the wolfman is holding has polka-dots - this is where the funny alt ideas begun bubbling. Look at his grin!!

I didn't mention but I'm very pleased with how the background came out on this one... it was only after I'd started painting that I went "oh wait how am I gonna make this look underwater".
This is a bad approach to watercolour painting. Plans must be laid out beforehand.
In retrospect I could've probably used proportionally large props, like a stone or a piece of driftwood, to make the fish look smaller, but I think I managed to make the background properly lively by splotching colours around. It was 100% just messing around and playing by ear lmao

as always here are some WIPs. these were all done as requests at a local event. I put out a call for ref sheets a week early and I'm glad I did lmao watercolour needs to dry between applications and i'd have run out of time if I didn't give myself a head start. Bit off a bit too much but was fun

i'd talked about the character with my roommate and they're the ones who said "like nighthawks?" re: the animatronic, diner-working creature, so they get credit for the idea! this is me just kinda trying to figure out what exactly they'd be doing. I would've probably gone with the first iteration with the thought-bubble to the paper hat (love it) but it would've been very difficult on the 6x8 canvas I was using. watercolour can be amenable to finer detail work but not here. I pretty quickly figured he should be leaning into the counter to help fit him into the frame and also give an idea of his height - they're meant to be about 9' tall though I wound up making them probably closer to 12' what with their knees reaching the counter!

sketches of thumbnails, trying to see how I can squeeze the idea into the canvas' proportions. Tried different leans and different angles. The problem I was trying to solve had to do with keeping the perspective from the original Nighthawks piece. The angle didn't feel very good for me, and I was wishing I could keep the sign above the window in frame and change the "Phillies" to "Furries" but, alas. Not this time.
Above are warm-up doodling (I do a lot of those).

Here is another sketch. I've figured out I can rotate the angle but was having a hard time conveying the character's height until I doodled the top-left sketch with a very pronounced leaning-in. With due respect to the owner, I kept thinking "I need to make this hornier" while keeping it appropriate lmao he needed to really be leaning in there! No shyness about it! This method worked imo.

aaand the final sketch concept before I drew onto the canvas. I was pretty nervous since this is a piece with finer detail and watercolour yadda yadda so I wanted to make sure I was nailing down the details, especially since with watercolour it can be very difficult to remove pigment once it's been added. One must paint from lightest to darkest colour and avoid the temptation of going back. Nighthawks is set at night so it has some pretty dark spots. I actually quite like this sketch!

Anyway uh here are the paintings. Watercolour was used on paper stretched to canvas, the feesh was the largest I've painting yet at 18"x24"! Hot press that one, cold press the two meme ones and uh idk what the Nighthawk one was but it was not meant for this medium lol #tradart #painting

A large watercolour canvas which shows a fish swimming along a lively, sandy/rocky riverbed. The fish is looking up with sparkling eyes as though dazzled by what they're seeing.
Someone sent me a reference pic that reminded me of MS Paint asking "can you draw my little fish" and I absolutely could not resist going all in lmao just look at this goober!! The requester's only ask was that the fish have big eyes with many sparkles and I hope I delivered. Another attendant was kind enough to bring some paint-on satin acrylic finish (water-based!) which I applied over the completed work to give it some shimering effect, which you can kinda see top left, the material hadn't dried yet but the owner reports it was effective. Between sketching/concept and painting this took maybe 6-8 hours.

The creature has a speech bubble showing a photo of a moonlit sky + a hawk, and question marks. This painting is a reference to Hooper's 1942 painting "Nighthawks". Two points if you got the reference!
The paper I used here was not made for watercolours and did not hold up well to being saturated lol the image did need a lot of finer detail work so that was fine there but it did make it difficult to know if it was actually applying paint or just making it wet at times... won't be using that again, but I had a great time referencing Hooper?? I guess that's why people do that when learning lmao I should do more.
Overall this one probably took the most time, figuring out the framing and such, more than 10 hours. I'm slow lol

Good ol' cold press, spent maybe 3-4 hours

They'd asked if I could do one or the other but i couldn't resist doing a diptych. Character's face is dissimilar because they sent me two different ref sheets, one being WIP, and I figured I may as well switch it out.
I ran a bit shorter on time to complete this one as I'd have liked to apply an additional darker layer, it can be difficult to tell how dark a painting will actually be once the ink dries. Also just noticing now that I made have tapered the waist too much hmmmmmmm. Another 3-4 hours here, cold press.

The alt option for this one was clown costume with comically wide tie (also rejected)

I'm literally drifting off to sleep when inspiration struck. Mostly thinking how funny the separated butt cheeks would be, with a gremlin torso, and weird ass shading colours. I have to be up in four hours ffs #renamon #doodle (I know the perspective is off the alt text addresses)
