And, who knows?
Maybe building this new pitch will give Celtic ideas for upgrading Celtic Park!

Hail Hail History 🍀@hailhailhistory· Jul 16 Just over a mile south from Celtic Park is arguably the most interesting site.
Barrowfield Park was once home to Clyde FC.
In May 1889, this was where Celtic won the North Eastern Cup, their first competition victory.

Hail Hail History 🍀@hailhailhistory· Jul 16 Heading east, Springfield Park was a short walk from Celtic Park.
This was the home venue for Strathclyde FC and was used until the 1960s.
It was also close to Celtic's Barrowfield training venue, which has recently been upgraded.

Hail Hail History 🍀@hailhailhistory· Jul 16 Close to the Glasgow International Arena was the Queen's Recreation Ground.
In the 1800s, this venue (found at Nuneaton Street) hosted different sports such as running, horse racing and cycling.
It was sometimes used for football too.

Hail Hail History 🍀@hailhailhistory· Jul 16 In the modern day, a very obvious sports site is the Glasgow International Arena.
This was formerly called the Emirates Arena and was built for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
This hosts athletics and other sports, as well as having a cycling velodrome.

Hail Hail History 🍀@hailhailhistory· Jul 16 The new pitch will be at Celtic Park's west side.
Another venue close to this was the Nelson athletic ground (also known as the Olympic stadium).
This was used for different races (running, cycling and greyhounds) from the early-1900s to the 1930s.

Hail Hail History 🍀@hailhailhistory· Jul 16 As well as the current Celtic Park, other pitches have existed locally.
The most obvious is the first Celtic Park, open from 1888-1892. It continued to be used for football after Celtic moved.
After this, it became flats and an Irn Bru factory.

Hail Hail History 🍀@hailhailhistory· Jul 16 The proposed new games area has gone to Glasgow City Council for planning permission.
The sports pitch will be run by the the Celtic Foundation. Access will be free for local children.

Hail Hail History 🍀@hailhailhistory· Jul 16 Celtic have submitted plans to build a "multi-use games area" next to Celtic Park.
Located at the west side of the ground, the pitch would be available for local youngsters.
Over the years, there's been numerous pitches close to Celtic Park.

30 years ago, the next stage of Celtic Park’s redevelopment took place.
The east stand (later named for the Lisbon Lions) opened in July 1996.
As with all Celtic Park stands, games were held to mark this occasion.
A thread about these matches…

Hail Hail History 🍀@hailhailhistory· Jul 9 It was a promo. Both sides displayed their rugs beforehand although still swapped pennants too.
The Celtic rug is a famous bit of memorabilia. I've got one in my loft.

Hail Hail History 🍀@hailhailhistory· Jul 9 In the Shelbourne v Celtic game, the man-of-the-match got a chainsaw!
When Feyenoord beat Celtic in 1970, they got a washing machine.
In Celtic's early days, tea services used to be a common reward.
What other unusual prizes have there been in Celtic games?

Hail Hail History 🍀@hailhailhistory· Jul 8 It is 30 years since the opening of Celtic's east stand (later named the Lisbon Lions).
Each time a new part of Celtic Park has opened, games have been held to mark this.

Hail Hail History 🍀@hailhailhistory· Jul 7 The answer is about Egypt manager Hossam Hassan.
He once played for Swiss team Neuchatel Xamax.
In the UEFA Cup in 1991, they beat Celtic 5-1 in Switzerland, with Hassan scoring four goals.
A tie best forgotten!

Hail Hail History 🍀@hailhailhistory· Jul 7 There's two World Cup last-16 matches tonight.
* Argentina v Egypt
* Switzerland v Colombia
What one issue could connect both these games to Celtic?
Clue: it's something best forgotten!
