While I will never forget seeing The Garden of Earthly Delights in the Prado at 18, I always feel like Hieronymus Bosch's drawings get short shrift. This is his atmospheric "The Owls' Nest" (c. 1505 - 1515).

In this pen and ink drawing, a large owl lands beside the hollow in which it has made its nest. A smaller owlet-- perhaps the owl's baby-- peers out. A third owl peers around a thick tree branch in the upper left of the drawing.
Other fascinating details include a spider who has spun its web between two forked branches in the right of the drawing, and hastily sketched smaller birds-- perhaps swallows-- in the background.

The way this basil smells

We have washed, blanched, and peeled the tomatoes. I am now sitting on my kitchen floor, feeling a little tired.

A blanching set-up, with peeled tomatoes closest to camera, then an ice bath with tomatoes cooling off, then the pot on the stove where the tomatoes are briefly plunged into boiling water, and finally a cutting board where tomatoes wait to be scored and plunged.

It's tomato sauce day, an important tradition that has existed since my in-laws first gifted me a huge box of sauce-grade tomatoes last summer.
