XVII. Statement on AI Use
Use of generative AI in this course is prohibited. I will not accept any work that has been created with the aid of generative AI. I came to this decision after much thought and research. I do not use (and will not use) generative AI in any aspect of my teaching. I expect you do not use generative AI for any coursework. I have read the arguments for and against generative AI in classrooms, teaching, and writing. Ultimately, I landed on my position after considering the following:

• Generative AI is terrible for the planet, the environment, and the future health of our globe (see McMenamin, 2025; Verma & Tan, 2024).
• Generative AI relies on exploited labor, in which workers are treated poorly and unethically (see Bartholomew, 2023; Muldoon, Graham, & Cant, 2024; Stahl, 2024; Williams, Milagros, & Gebru, 2022).
• Generative AI repeats social biases against people of color and women (Ananya, 2024; Miller, 2024; Wan, Pu, Sun, Garimella, Chang, & Peng, 2023).

I recommend the video essay, “AI is an Ethical Nightmare” by philosopher Abigail Thorn for more information on these three points.

Finally, I have opted against the use of generative AI because I believe we should focus on the social, human dimensions of teaching and learning. Mrs. Chanea Bond, an English teacher in Texas who I deeply admire and respect, noted on AI: “Lots of folks talk about using AI to brainstorm, organize thoughts, plan, and/or revise and edit, but that’s where the magic of writing and creating happens. Even if a student isn’t plagiarizing, how much of their thinking is changed and shaped by machines?” I am most interested in how you take up ideas, share your thinking, and engage in readings from the course. I am not interested in what generative AI has to say.

I understand the urge to turn to generative AI when time is short or you’ve hit a roadblock with your writing. Rather than use generative AI, I ask that you reach out to me. We can set up a meeting (during office hours or another time) to discuss your ideas and map out a way around the roadblock in your writing. If you are behind on an assignment, then reach out to me. We can plan to get you caught up. I would rather you ask for a reasonable extension on an assignment than use generative AI.

I am committed to refocusing on the human element of teaching and learning. Thank you for being part of this mission with me.

and Hate in PreK-12 Schools and Teacher Education
DEADLINE MARCH 1, 2025 (BUT WE WILL HELP YOU!)

You could write about one or more of these topics:

• How can educational leaders support shifts towards love and affirmation for the fat body, fostering self-esteem and identifying and dismantling harmful practices?
• How can leaders transform institutions (childcare settings, K–12 schools, university programs) into sanctuary spaces for fat individuals navigating the complex intersections of race, gender, sexualities, abilities, languages, and/or religions?
• What problems do you see in your setting? What do you hear from teachers, students, and families that worries you? That prompts you toward change (even if you have not taken steps yet toward change)?
• What solutions have you tried or do you want to try to address fatphobia in classrooms, schools, and districts?
• What role can texts, fiction and nonfiction, play in countering fatphobia and fostering love for the fat body?

Is your school a sanctuary - a place of support and affirmation, teaching all students and teachers to love and affirm the fat body?
If so, tell us about it; if not, document and write about the
need for change.
