Though the oral traditions that were once present across all dimensions of Māori lived reality may not be as prevalent or accessible as they once were, the foundational Mātauranga Māori understanding of sleep continues to be transmitted intergenerationally. This research has essentially provided the foundation for the continued reclamation and re-privileging of this knowledge, as well as highlighting the importance of ensuring continued critical reflexivity and decolonial education for those who work within health promotion and are responsible for the creation and dissemination of health messaging.

Platforms should be required to be fully transparent regarding marketing exposure metrics and remove content that is in breach of the law. We also call for tighter regulation of influencer marketing to protect minors and for penalties to be enforced when influencers fail to disclose promotion of harmful commodities.

The findings from this study suggest that Australian media professionals are motivated by a desire to raise awareness about suicide and suicide prevention, with many reporting a tension between wanting to use the guidelines to support safe reporting and concerns that the guidelines are restricting media coverage of an important community issue. The study also revealed that lived experience of suicide, including their own personal experiences, often influence the decision to report suicide and the way it is reported.

Similar to the consensus that there being ‘no safe lower limit’ to alcohol consumption, there is no ‘harmless’ level of driving. To reduce driving harm, driving itself needs to be reduced both by creating a built environment conducive to other modes and by reducing the incentives for driving. Harm is harm, and driving harm needs to be considered alongside the other big commercial killers of our age.

To prevent certain alcohol products from being promoted and perceived as healthier options, policymakers should consider restricting the use of these claims on alcohol packaging and in related marketing materials.”
