Aminoglycosides are the standard of care for bacterial infections, but they can cause hearing loss as a side effect. Emerging Research Grants scientist Francisco Barros-Becker, Ph.D., is unraveling how these drugs damage hearing in order to prevent it from happening. hhf.org/blogs/antibi... #grants

In the zebrafish model, a lysosome-disrupting treatment (GPN) protects hair cells from slow gentamicin damage but not from rapid neomycin damage. GPN significantly increased hair cell survival when given with gentamicin (A) but had no protective effect against neomycin (B). This suggests lysosomes are crucial in gentamicin's slower cell-killing process but not in neomycin's rapid damage pathway.

1. Check specifics of your insurance coverage. 2. If you're a veteran, see if you qualify for coverage by the VA. 3. Consider vocational rehab programs.

4. Look into local Sertoma and Lion's Club chapters. 5. Give Costco or Sam's Club a try. 6. Do you need the highest/most expensive tech level?

7. If you have mild to moderate hearing loss, see if OTC hearing aids are right for you. 8. And if so, consider trying Apple's new OTC hearing aids feature.
