i saw a netplay millia do it a couple years ago on i-no and it blew my mind; the IAD j.K is connecting in the same way as 6H IAD j.K on tall guys but it looks sooooooooo cool

A page from my notes on tall guys and IAD j.K combos. Roughly half the cast is vulnerable in some way, but some can only be hit in neutral or while in a combo (i.e. they stand up while hit). Funnily enough, Ky is one that can only be hit like this mid-combo!

i think this last paragraph is a beautiful way to describe playstyle. if i'd started out learning garden loops i woulda been bored+frustrated; if i learned them now i think i'd just be bored. following my own desires has made me who I am as a player and that approach is more fun to revisit everyday

I like to visualize the learning process like you're making a sculpture; instead of envisioning the perfect high-level gameplay as Michaelangelo's David, that you're going to carve out of a block of marble, you are instead assembling your own sculpture from bits and pieces of knowledge acquired here and there, until you arrive at something that is completely yours, and satisfying to you. If you spend your time looking at "perfection" and trying to shave off the flaws from your own play until you get there, you will remain perpetually unsatisfied, but if you instead look at the little lessons you learn from day-to-day play as building blocks that you are assembling into a statue of your own, you get to constantly experience the joy of learning something new. Not only is this better for your long-term engagement, it's also how the experts assembled their own knowledge; it only looks like David to you because you don't see the little flaws and jank that they do.
