A S H W A R D E N

One key, wind-flung from indigo, rooted in garden-void, grew where no root grew– now grey, moss-fledged, black-budded,
both boughs in flower and in fruit.

Alone she stands, no sister-crown close by, Venus of the wood, tilting towards day-star’s eye.

She calls the bullfinch, owl, beetle-brood
to shelter, weep, hide, grow, watch, admire;
her roots run deep, her keys spin down
like sparks flung from piano-fire.

At her fissured foot, some other door stands ajar on light I've no name for.

I contain the failure of cellular energy pathways,
the mitochondria folding like tired horses.
I am the moment after poetry —
I am brightness draining from the room,
I am muscles gone to ruin,
I am the amphitheatre emptied of its crowd,
the tired horse that will not fold.
This is not transgression.
This is a simple night of living.
I have borne it. I am large enough to bear it again.

Not the green that mattered
but the mattering of green,
the way the window ratifies

what was always leaning there.
The engine house of the infinite
have strung theorems through granite.

The door considered standing
and found it supreme.
The cord runs from necessity

to necessity: envoy of the unseen,
its hum the Atlantic argument.
The frame excludes.

What happens to the left
happens as the gorse:
in yellow. Unannounced.

The cord pulls north across the ceiling,
taut, humming. I trace it.

Not everything erased should be.
Some lines hold the room together,
some conduct what we need.

The door stands open
onto green, untidily alive.
Something turning towards the light,
persisting,

happening, as most things do,
just off frame.

Scoured past the whim-shaft, I
surfaced from the carapace I didn't
fashion – the gnaw, the want
for borrowed gazes, for any
benediction gilded as flowers.
Something loosened. I
came back to only
killas, mizzle, what I wanted.

To genuflect on granite, to
unravel the courteous lie,
to kneel with
nothing performed, my
name slack as hands
of sea-fret, turned
seaward, throat up,
ribs unlatched – and
on Carn Galva, be
not cleaved, not utterly
armoured, just empty.
