The second phase of her plan began today, no
matter what. It was pleasantly warm outside, enough that
she’d thrown the bedroom windows wide open to scour
away thecreeping staleness of winter with the pungent, swirling smells of spring. The early March sky was a
brilliant blue, dotted with a few fluffy clouds floating
along on the breeze that kept stirring her papers, and
she pushed herself from her desk, tipping the chair on
its back feet to look through theskylight. She wanted to be up there. But there were earthly concerns to be dealt with
first. The sound of metallic hammering echoed across
theyard from the barn, perking herearsand cementing
her decision to go outside. She needed a break from
learning about ramjets and the Canav’r-den-Tenso fuel
conversion process, so she stretched, thumped the
forelegs of the chair back on the floor, and gathered up
her notesand the manual to stow them insidethe desk. The drawers opened and shut smoothly,and she had to
admit, she was proud of her handiwork as she dragged
her fingers across the dark-stained top. Marie had
guided her in building it, and together, they’d finished it
piece by piece over the last two months when things
slowed in thelittle workshop outsidethe window.

The crane hummed and whirred as they gently
guided the final turbofan toward the cradle, and when
it settled into place with a soft click and the straps lost
their tension, Sugé and Marek sighed in relief. The
Nehirnis was nearly there, theresult of two busy, nerve- wracking weeks sincetheir trip to Maine. She sat down on the hull above the
maneuvering inlet and slipped off her thick gloves with
a tired yawn, watching Marek clamber up to release the
ratchet straps from the crane's crossbeam. He carefully
avoided the countless razor-sharp blades and pulled
the straps free, then tossed them in a pile on the floor
with a muffled, bouncing clank before he made his way
over to settle beside her. Her hand lifted in a high five, and he replied in kind before lacing their fingers
togetherand leaningin to smooch her cheek. "We're almost done," she said, blushing when he
plunked down between her knees and wiggled in
backwards so she could embrace his shoulders in tired
victory."Pretty damn close, I think. You'd know better
about that than me, though."

it's tempting, but ultimately you still have to reverse the ring and pinion of whatever gearbox goes into it, which unfortunately costs money however, i think i need to start laying the groundwork for that with a swap i already have just sitting around:

The flow stopped with a loud beep and she
awoke from her place on the wall, looking down at her
now-pristine hazard suit and taking a moment to study
her gloves. The panel by the door glowed a pleasant
blue when she stepped out of the shower, and she
dripped a curtain of clean that trailed her across the
room to the lockers. Although the decaying concrete
clung wetly to her boots as if to spite her, she couldn’t
care less, and she shook off a rainstorm of fluid that
spattered into globs in the dust. A monitor on the wall claimed that the air was
clean and oxygen levels were appropriate after the
equalization, so she released the seal on the hood and
took a deep breath. Perhaps it was overly brave and
foolhardy, but she was too tired to beafraid anymore. To an extent. She finally exhaled after a few worrisome
seconds, listening to the beat of her heart and the
murmur of the ventilation system. Nothing happened, and sheremained Seneriya. She plunked down on the dusty bench, then
unloaded, cleared, and folded up her littlerifle. She was
quietly thankful that she hadn’t needed to use it as she
gazed down at the single box-like round from the
chamber sitting in her hand. A small mercy, she
thought, then clicked it back into the magazine before
she tugged the radio over by its lanyard to try and raise

Marek. He was undoubtedly waiting by the bulkhead
door and probably frantic with worry, so she keyed the
micand told him that it was safeto comein. Her ears swiveled and listened for the sound of
the lift motors, eager for both his company in the
aftermath and his help in getting out of the suit. As
much as her back ached, she decided to get a jump on
it, wincing as she wriggled around for the backzip. She
hadn’t made much progress before the door to the
decontamination showers slid open. Marek stood nervously in the light of the hallway
with the shotgun in his hands and the lenses of his gas
mask foggy with perspiration. Despite the mist, she
could see his wide eyes beneath the panes as he stared
in surpriseat her bare head. "Are you sure it's safe?" he asked with a muffled
touch of panic in his voice, and she smiled and nodded
tiredly, beckoning him to comesit with her. "Vha, I'm pretty sure," she replied, but his wary
body language encouraged her to explain further. "I
think whatever it was, it is… gone. Perhaps it did not
last very long. That’s why it sent itself again a few days
later." The cold metal bench creaked when she twisted
her neck and stretched her shoulders, and she freed a
wideyawn. "Well, alright. Maybe. If you're sure, I guess I'm

sure too." He set his shotgun down beside her rifle and
slipped off the mask for a gasp of surprisingly fresh air, then slipped his hands over her damp shoulders and
squeezed gently. She replied with a soft sound of
contentment when hekissed thetop of her head. "I missed you," he whispered in clear relief. She reached up and took hold of his fingers, returning the kiss on the back of his hand. "I missed
you too," she murmured, thankful for the grounding of
his touch. "I wanted to explore more, but Iam so tired." He nodded. "Yeah, me too," he said, then sniffed
at her. "Didn't you just take a shower, sash'veda?" he
teased, and she replied with a roll of the eyes and a
severe pinch to his fingers. She may not have had the wherewithal to say it
just yet, but she loved this boy, powerfully so. It was a
new and unfamiliar sensation, something that she had
never felt with anyone. He'd unlocked a long-dormant
warmth inside her, and in some way, she felt like she’d
done the very same for him. It made things easier, the
enormity of her burden tolerable, and each day worth
rising to meet. She was quietly grateful for his patience
as shesorted out the pieces to the puzzles of her future
and her past, and with this obstacle cleared, perhaps
she could finally indulge her feelings for him in more
than fitsand starts.

That was whereshe wanted to be. "Oh yes, we have one of those, too," she giggled
as she suddenly bounded ahead, racing through the
crumbling snow. She danced happily on limber toes
among the patches of damp, brown earth and fallen
pine needles, and Marek's face crinkled into a smile
while he watched. A darkness had lifted for both of
them, and all the brief, flickering fragments of her true
nature had now become whole before his eyes. She
harangued him to hurry up with a beaming, playful
grin, and he laughed and accepted her barefooted dare
by kicking off his own sneakers and socks, then
pranced across the bitingcold of theyard to join her. They clambered in cautiously, sitting shoulder to
shoulder with their feet dangling over above a bed of
soft loam and pine needles. The valley expanded
endlessly into a thick blue haze in the warm, humid air, and the soft whistle and hush of the breeze mingled
with the trickles of meltwater carving canyons through
the snow. Sugé tipped her long neck back to stare
upward at the sun as it filtered through the gently
waving boughs, savoring the delirious blueness of the
sky. Marek rested his head on her shoulder and
tickled lightly at her bare knee, earning a lazy, untroubled swat at his hand. "How're you feeling now?" he asked, and she replied with a quiet, thoughtful hum
and a wiggle of her six toes.

Marek drifted off into the kitchen in a mild daze
to make them some tea as they settled in on the couch
for Amelia’s well-meaning interrogation. Everything just
seemed to be happening terribly fast, and after Sugé's
revelations tonight, he was beginning to feel a bit
overwhelmed. This wasn’t exactly how he expected
their introduction to go, yet it had come and gone and
things seemed to be fine. That was all he could ask for. A peal of shared laughter spilled out of the living room, and a great sense of relief washed over him while the
kettleslowly roseto a boil. “So you’re the real deal,” Amelia said, taking off
her coat and scarf. “I’m impressed. I’ll be honest, I never
really gave meeting an alien much thought before
tonight but I always expected some kind of mean, spooky-looking black-eyed fetus thing with bad
intentions, and instead… you’re really pretty and the
only bad thing about you is that you make me feel
really, really short.” Sugé’s brow furrowed. “That does not sound like
anything I have ever seen, but…” She smiled. “I am glad
you think I’m pretty.” Amelia tilted her head. “Everyone deserves to
feel pretty. And you have the kind of long lashes I’d kill
for. God. And that marking on your snout is glorious. And like, I haveto ask, whatareyou?”

“I know. Me too. I just… I want you to remember
that it’s on thetable.”
“It isn’tanymore,” shereplied in a quiet voice. Hefollowed her back upstairs. Flight Maintenance was one of the few offices
with a view of the hangar, but black soot and thick
firefighting foam still clung to the glass and obscured
their view. Only littlecracks in thelayers gavesome hint
of the space beyond, flashing with each pass of the
yellow emergency lamps that still spun on some far,
invisible wall. Their light cast a strange repetitive glow
over the room while Sugé carefully cleared the
workstation of aged, crumbling squares of paper and
stretched out the sodden heap of the hazard suit to
give it a final inspection. Beside her, Marek checked the
cheap radios he hoped would keep them in touch. They
wouldn't penetrate the concrete, but from his vantage
point behind the soot-blackened windows, they had a
clear line of transmission to the airlock. It was a total
gamble whether they’d work or not, and he yawned
uncomfortably as the knot of fear in his chest
continued to draw itself ever tighter.

the hardest part of this job is explaining to a customer why their suspension is toast

the rear suspension of a nissan rogue, a collection of moving and suspending parts. a slice of toast is caught between the spring and the axle, probably placed there by some kind of small furry creature in anticipation of a later snack.

She wondered if her quarters were intact when
she entered the common area and paused to look
around. The chairs were still circled, same as they were
the morning everything fell apart, like silent sentinels
gazing up at the enormous hand-painted mural of the
station’s sponsor city of Riviat high on the back wall. It
seemed appropriate to step lightly around the edge of
the room, and she made a careful effort not to disturb
anything as she followed Marek’s prints toward the
gulping portal of thestairs. A barely legible sign called to her from the wall
beside the water fountain, and she brushed the dust
away. It was a strict reminder for all project participants
to avoid any unauthorized interactions with the
raodaazi. So much for that. The sound of heavy boots began to spill from
above, and Marek soon reappeared on the lowest
landing of the wide stairwell, chasing the beam of his
flashlight. She shielded her face when it washed over
her, and he paused, quickly aiming it aside and
illuminating the floating motes stirred by his rapid
descent.
