Max Weber Fellow at EUI | Researcher & Lecturer at LMU Munich | PhD LMU & Uni Oxford | 👉 Leadership | 🇺🇸 Withdrawal from multilateralism | 🇪🇺 Blame games
How should #Europe🇪🇺 adapt its foreign and security policy to thrive in a world increasingly marked by #geopolitics and #multipolarity? a) Side with #US🇺🇸 against #China🇨🇳 in a #ColdWar 2.0? b) Focus on #autonomy & ad hoc coalitions? c) Save #multilateralism 🇺🇳 with small & #middlepower partners?
Is the rules-based #order over? 🇺🇳 – Not yet, but it faces a crucial turning point and its fate is also in the hands of #Europe! 🇪🇺 This was the key takeaway of my talk at the #Pfalzakademie Lambrecht today: www.atlantische-akademie.de/susc26
Are #middlepower alliances between like-minded actors, such as #Europe 🇪🇺 and #Canada 🇨🇦, a viable pathway into a future marked by increased geopolitical rivalry? For a talk at the #AkademieSchwerin, I critically revisited some common assumptions in Western capitals…
📊 The book finds that the #resilience or #decay of multilateral institutions after the US withdrawal depends on whether other actors, notably Western powers and the #EU, are willing to provide #leadership and organise coalitions, including the #GlobalSouth, to fill the void left by the #US.
🔎 The book explores #US disengagement from int' organisations & agreements since 1945 and the impact on cooperation, leveraging interviews with IO and member-state officials, including >40 over the past year with support by the @eui-eu.bsky.social Max Weber Programme and an #EUI ESR grant.
The rules-based #order is not doomed to fail – its fate rests with #middlepowers who can fill the gap left by the #US under #Trump! 📖 This is a key takeaway from my book, "After Exit: US withdrawal and alternative leadership," which is now under contract with Oxford University Press #OUP!
How does the massive #US disengagement under #Trump challenge multilateral institutions? What are the costs and opportunities? And are other powers, such as #China or #Europe willing and able to fill the void? It was a pleasure discussing these and other questions with @jenkirby.bsky.social:
Elettra Bargellini, @flaviacanestrini.bsky.social, and I had the pleasure to convene a stellar group of #history, #law, #IR and #IPE scholars, incl. #EUI colleagues from the MWP, @eui-history.bsky.social, @eui-law.bsky.social, @eui-sps.bsky.social, @eui-schuman.bsky.social & @eui-stg.bsky.social.
It’s a wrap! Over the last two days, we discussed the current #crisis of the rules-based #order, historical precedents, and perspectives for the future of the #EU. I could not have hoped for a better finale to the academic year @eui-eu.bsky.social #EUI !
All set for our workshop “Revisiting the Rules-Based Order’s Crisis: Contemporary Challenges, Historical Precedent and Lessons for EU’s Future” (#EUI, Emeroteca, June 16-17)
🎙️Podcast: The crisis of the rules-based #order and #multilateralism, shifts in #US foreign and #security policy – and how they are also reflected in US popular culture🇺🇸🎶 For this & more, tune in to the latest episode of #KörberStiftung #ListentoWissen / #ByteFM "Wissen"!

I am very grateful for this opportunity to share insights from my research on #US disengagement from #multilateralism and Europe’s response, as well as my everyday life at @globalpoliticslmu.bsky.social @lmu.de #LMU and as a Max Weber Fellow at the #EUI @eui-eu.bsky.social @eui-sps.bsky.social!
🎙️Podcast interview: How has #Trump 🇺🇸 changed world politics? And how can #Germany 🇩🇪 & #Europe 🇪🇺 cope with growing #uncertainty and #greatpower competition? About these & other questions, I talked with Caro Matzko for #ARD Alpha "Science TeaTime" of course over a cup of tea!
📣Call for mentorships Female doctoral candidates and students at #LMU Faculty of Social Sciences can apply until 1 July! As a mentor, I would be delighted to support you in pursuing your career within and outside academia! #GenderEquality #MentorHer #Gleichberechtigung
Happy to start a new project with @idos-research.bsky.social #IDOS on how IOs and their member states can respond to #US withdrawal under #Trump 2.0!
It also highlights our distinction between different types of blame games in multi-level systems, and the explanatory model, emphasizing the role of clarity of responsibility in #IO decision-making and the plausibility assessment taking place in (functional) public spheres.
What an insightful and thought-provoking review of our book "European Blame Games" by @tommccraehunter.bsky.social in the latest issue of Politique européenne @politiqueue.bsky.social, co-edited by @samuelbhfaure.bsky.social & Angela Tacea: doi.org/10.3917/poeu...
Has #Trump rendered established #IR theories obsolete? Today, I had the pleasure to discuss theories of #US #foreignpolicy and their continued value to understand current developments from the war against #Iran to the withdrawal from #multilateralism!
First time for me as a guest in a TV studio, discussing how uncertain our world has become since #Trump took office with Caro Matzko for the #ARD Alpha Show "Science TeaTime" at the @brkommunikation.bsky.social #BR yesterday!
