-those 4,000 dead soldiers, men killed while serving alongside him in Kilo Company of the 3rd Battalion of the 8th Marines.

"Five guys in my company died in Ramadi," he recalls.

"Four all at once, in an IED (im-provised explosive device) blast, and one was shot in the head a week later. The company was only 150 men, and, once you do even one tour with these guys, you get to know them very well.

"One of the guys was a corpsman. He was new; I didn't know him very well. One of the other four was a machine gunner. His name was Scott Procopio, from Saugus, Mass. He was a good friend of mine.

"We were both pretty decent machine gunners.
He was riding in a truck when it got hit with an IED. They died pretty quick. It was a mess. The other guy, who was shot, was also a machine-gunner, Rick James, from Delaware.

"The first couple of times it happens, it hurts," he said. "You're not used to it, and losing friends is a hard thing to swallow. The problem is, after a while, once it happens enough, you don't become callous to it, it still hurts, but there's nothing you can do. It's said and done."

Platner said avenging the deaths of friends becomes part of the chemistry of combat, a chemistry steeped in adrenaline.

"The day that those four guys were killed, one of our posts killed two insurgents, and everyone was psyched," he said. "We were happy as hell. It's always nice to kill the bad guys, and it's also always nice to get back something.

"You do want revenge, and you teel angry, and you want to hurt somebody. You also feel sad; these guys are your friends. It's hard to see a bunch of guys you think are really tough, sitting around, holding each other, crying. It's not what you expect, but it happens."

The insurgents who were Platner's primary targets aren't "patriots," he said, as they are some times portrayed.

"They ticked us off," he said. "There's nothing legitimate about these guys. It's not a legitimate in surgency, where they've got this great political goal. They're a bunch of thugs and criminals, and I'm not saying that because I fought against them... These guys kill a lot more civilians than anyone else, whether it's American troops or Iraqi troops. It's a lot easier to kill civilians, so they target them. They're cowards."

Platner said Marines and others fighting the insurgents weren't beyond making examples of those they killed. After a mortar attack, Marines who were shelled staked out the mortar launcher left behind and targeted those who returned to collect it.

"My battalion did that, in Fallujah," he said. "It wasn't my company. One of the other companies did that, waited for them to come back and drilled them when they did. That was good; that's how you're supposed to do it."

After killing the insurgents who returned to the mortar launcher, the Marines who shot them burned their bodies, Platner said.

"That was not a bad choice, I think," he said. "They were insurgents, not random guys, and they weren't suspected insurgents; they were a mortar team. They got them, and they set their bodies on fire. Marines have this tendency to say: 'You wanna screw with us? Well, fine. You can screw with us, but, when we catch you, we'll make you pay for it: It's the leaving the whole calling card thing."

Platner said he regrets his company never encountered those who lobbed mortars into his base camp.

"We never got a mortar team," he said. "Wished we did. It would have been nice to, to get a little revenge for keeping us up at night. Getting mortared is an awful experience, although it keeps the blood pumping. It's exciting."

A 2003 graduate of John Bapst High School in Bangor, Platner, who is the son of Bronson Platner and Leslie Harlow, both of Ellsworth, will be formally discharged on April 29.

His plans are to attend George Washington University in Washington, D.C., this fall, where he'll study international relations with an eye toward working overseas for the State Department.

For now, he's glad to be home, even though he realizes the people around him don't care about the war, only its cost and its financial impact on a struggling U.S. economy.

"I loved Iraq," he said. "I loved being there. I loved fighting there, and the whole nine yards. It was one of the greatest experiences in my life. You come home, and people are proud of you. They always tell you that they are. They've got the yellow ribbons on the cars, and they tell you: 'Good job, son, we're behind you? But people don't care; it's not their problem.

"It bugs you, you know? You go over there, you put all this energy into this war, trying to make things better, and you sacrifice a lot. And guys you know sacrifice more, sacrifice everything. And you come home, and you're sitting in a bar, and you see a friend of yours from high school who says, 'So, what have you been doing?' And you say: 'I've been fighting in Iraq' And they say, 'Oh yeah, well, college is hard, too! And I think: Sure it is, dude. I'm sure it's hard."

Platner seems baffled by Americans' concern over the economic cost of the war effort, but not the human cost.

"Don't get me wrong, it's a lot of money," he said. "It's insane, but that's what people care about. Four thousand men are dead, American men,
and 70,000 are wounded. That's incredible. People care about the money, not the 4,000 men. They didn't know them. They weren't related to them, and they weren't friends with them, so Americans tend to see it as not being a big enough problem. It's sad, I think.

"You get angry sometimes. You see people on the streets (here), living a nice happy life, and sometimes you think 'I wish to God that you could just spend a week living in the shoes of an Iraqi."

My wife and I informally rehabilitate the traumatized and semi-feral cats we adopt. I would never do anything that would make them scared or anxious unless it's in their best interest. Having a cat completely trust you is one of the best feelings in the world. Here are two of them!
