The Call
The unknown number that leaves
a message—says your mother and
accident and something about a neighbor who might be looking after her
elderly dog— particular, peculiar,
dissolving into anodyne music,
on hold for the ER nurse who can't talk
now but promises to call back
an hour ago. The evening shifts
into a different kind of time. Only
yesterday I was skidding on ice.
