The dress is, certainly, or was. My assumption is that there is a huge difference between the meaning of "what color is this representation of a dress" and "what color is/was the dress that this image is a representation of." The image has no blue, white, gold OR black.

It looks like a white fabric under dim bluish light to us, more specifically, the blueish white you see in videos taken in shadow next to a sunlit background, with the foreground poorly lit, possibly by fluorescents. I can as easily ask you, how do you see this as black rather than gold?
