Like countless East Germans, Jürgen's life collapsed and he became permanently unemployed when the GDR was annexed by the West in 1990, wiping out jobs, pensions, and economic stability. He was not a dissident artist who the West could exploit, and all his public works were destroyed.
Jürgen was celebrated for his public commissions of muscular male athletes, especially the “Youth and Sport” series of 1964 featuring comrades training and showering together. His exhibitions in the GDR and the USSR were attended in droves.
Comrades, report to the showers. Enjoy some state-funded homoeroticism by gay East German icon Jürgen Wittdorf (born today in 1932).
Any socialists want to recreate a gay version? (R. B. Kitaj, "Communist and Socialist," 1975; content warning: heterosexuality)
”I will make inseparable cities with their arms about each other’s necks, By the love of comrades, By the manly love of comrades.“ —Walt Whitman, “For You O Democracy”
Queers of the world, unite: it’s International Workers’ Day! From working people to queers to colonized people and victims of imperialism, our struggles are all connected.
"I would like to dedicate this first space flight to the people of communism, a society into which our Soviet people are already entering and into which, I am sure, all people on Earth will eventually enter." Forgive us, Yuri, we really fucked everything up.
Cosmonautics Day. Yuri Gagarin, the son of a carpenter and a dairy farmer whose village, like countless in the USSR, was invaded and occupied by Nаzіs, became the first person to cross into space and orbit Earth on his journey aboard the Vostok 1 today in 1961. He was 27 years old.

Happy bday to the “fairy godmother of East German queеrs,” trans icon Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. After killing her Nazi father and being freed from prison by the Red Army, she took over a villa in East Berlin, which became a meeting point for Eastern Europe’s first gay liberation group, the HIB.
It's International Women's Day. Remember, anti-woman, anti-queer, and anti-trans sentiment are in part a reaction to the refusal to adhere to the sexual and gendered norms that serve capital, and we are all part of the struggle for liberation from patriarchy.
"When women enjoy their own sources of income, and the state guarantees social security in old age, illness, and disability, women have no reason to stay in abusive, unfulfilling, or unhealthy relationships." Full book by Kristen Ghodsee here: archive.org/details/why-...
Pier Paolo Pasolini's “Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom” has proven to be prophetic and not at all metaphorical: fascists acting out sadistic sexual fantasies on boys and girls as the rest of us are utterly fucked and forced to eat shit. Happy bday to Pasolini, a gay marxist and therefore a genius.
Hans and his comrades founded the White Rose in 1942 as an anti-fascist resistance movement. They were found guilty of treason and executed by guillotine the same day as their trial. Almost a century later and the German state continues to prove it never met a genocide it didn't support.
Hans Scholl was arrested at 19 for homosexual activity, after his former boyfriend outed him to the SS. In prison, he vowed to become “something great for the sake of mankind.” He and his fellow White Rose members Sophie Scholl and Christoph Probst were executed by the N–zis on this day in 1943.
"Who among us can imagine the degree of shame that will come upon us and upon our children when the veil falls from our eyes and the awful crimes that infinitely exceed any human measure are exposed to the light of day?" —From a White Rose leaflet by Hans Scholl and Alexander Schmorell, 1942
Huey and the Panthers understood the interconnectedness of the Black struggle with that of other oppressed groups, also lending their support to liberation movements around the globe, especially the Palestinian struggle.
