A betrothed princess flees and a sky pirate captain is hired to bring her home.
Princess Tessa is engaged to her father’s advisor, Lord Xensor. Magic is taboo, and still Lord Xensor practices in secret. To protect her family and kingdom from his evil rule, Tessa runs away from home.
The royal family hires James, a sky pirate captain, to bring her back. Meanwhile, Lord Xensor sends Craven, his right-hand man, after her. James wants nothing to do with the politics and only dreams of wealth and adventure. Craven is a loyal dog who will do anything he’s told.
Tessa doesn’t know what Lord Xensor has planned for her, but she knows it can’t be good. She’ll do anything to keep him from the throne, even if it means they all have to face some hard truths in the process.

He wore a black vest and matching trousers with gold trimming that cost a bit extra, but really shimmered in the right light. A white, puffy-sleeved shirt stuck out from under the vest.

On top of his head was a black tricorn decorated with a rose at the center, and a large, white feather poking out. James told people it was a roc feather, but, in reality, he'd bought it at an open-air market from an elephant bird farmer. His blond hair was combed under his hat, though tousled from traveling The Twelve Skies.

James could not help patting himself on the back, and he would be more than sure to gloat in his opponent’s face when he had the opportunity. Poor guy. Ten Paces by Izzy King

Gun held down at his side, Phillip West lowered his eyes to his feet. He drummed his other leg with his fingers. “Are you sure about this, son?” he asked.

Kolten West was Phillip’s oldest child and his only son. They had never really seen eye to eye. That had only worsened as Kolten grew up. In his twenties now, he was old enough to start his own family and argue with his own son. Instead, he insisted on dueling his father. This slight had been the final one as far as Kolten was concerned.

Kolten’s eyes blazed with ferocity when he nodded.

Phillip’s stomach twisted. This was really happening. “Okay,” Phillip said.

A quick shot would be all it would take, and neither of their lives would ever be the same. Phillip knew this, but he also knew if he pulled his shot Kolten would never trust him again. They had to do this, and they had to do it right.

Finn—Kolten’s best friend—stood off the center of the grassy knoll. Stairs led downward right behind him. He stepped forward and raised his hand. “You know the rules, both of you?”

Phillip and Kolten turned away from each other. Finn counted their ten paces. He hollered and Phillip’s ears rung as he spun around, lifted his arm, and shot.

Kolten made no sound as he gripped his chest. His knees buckled and his eyes watered as he glanced up at his father. Phillip dropped his gun and ran at top speed to catch his falling son.

“I’m so sorry, Kolt. I’m so sorry,” Phillip wailed, but it was too late. Kolten slumped in Phillip’s arms.

Text below the stars which reads: I give this book 2 stars because I loved the story right up until the ending. The ending changed everything, and in order for it to work the author had to withhold a lot of information from the reader.

The twist wasn’t my favorite, because it sort of came out of nowhere. It ruined the whole book for me, and the only reason I don’t give this 0 stars is I did enjoy the ride right up until the ending.

A woman moves home after her mother's death to run the family's café. She finds her neighbor dead on her way from work and ends up reuniting with his son.

Despite being a murder mystery, it was a sweet story of two childhood friends getting to know each other again. I adored the book the whole way through. The MC spends most of the book trying to look for the murderer but ends up on the wrong path until the end when she finds out who it is. It's a sweet story despite being centered around death. Nicely grounded in reality.

I checked and there's like 11 of them? I might read the next one when I have an opening in my TBR

“What’s that?” Daniel asked, finally turning to James. “A map?”

“Not just any map. The princess’s map,” James said.

“The…princess?” Daniel obviously wasn’t following.

“Oh, was that the confidential job at the palace? Interesting…” Daniel said. He turned back to the clipboard.

Princess Tessa has grown up in Windfall, the capital of Winderia, and is expected to marry soon as her aging father wants a successor. Since Tessa has been reluctant up to now to find a proper husband, her parents announce her engagement to Lord Xensor, the king's advisor. Tessa is distraught and runs away from home.

Meanwhile, Captain James finds himself at a job auction where the auctioneer offers up a job from the royal family—confidential, of course, but there are whispers of the missing princess. James jumps on this one with images of the grateful princess dancing through his mind.

Craven is sent in secret by Lord Xensor to bring Tessa home, too. Maybe ransom her back to the royal family and make Lord Xensor look useful.

Will Captain James get to Tessa first? Will they fly away and have all the adventures in the world? Or will Craven catch her and bring her back to marry the evil Lord Xensor?
