New semaphore snafu: Nina (or someone at NPR) just saw a new flag go up. Alito does signal his intentions, running them up the flagpole, so to speak.

Alito flew the Appeal to Heaven flag outside of his New Jersey beach house during the first, overt insurrection. It’s a banner that was carried by some of the rioters on January 6, 2021. It serves as a call for a government that is centered around the Bible.
Alito also flew an upside-down American flag outside his Virginia home. It’s a symbol of maritime distress that's been co-opted by a fascist movement that sought to overthrow the American election in a violent coup on January 6, 2021.

In the episode "Justice" a young crew member is sentenced to death on the planet of the Edo for the offense of stepping on the grass in a public space.

The Edo are ‘managed’ by an all-powerful god being who considers the planet’s inhabitants to be its own children. It is this top down and draconian application of the law which highlights a lack of justice or compassion in the Edo society. Instead, their system emphasizes control, and not necessarily for the Edo’s benefit. The system in which the god shifts which area will be the ‘punishment zone’, an area in which the law will be applicable for a set amount of time, creates an environment of uncertainty and limited information, a fear based control tactic. The strict god is more interested in absolute obedience

Thomas Clement Douglas PC CC SOM (20 October 1904 – 24 February 1986) was a Scottish-born Canadian politician who served as the seventh premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961 and leader of the New Democratic Party from 1961 to 1971. A Baptist minister, he was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in 1935 as a member of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF). He left federal politics to become leader of the Saskatchewan Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and then the seventh Premier of Saskatchewan. His government introduced the continent's first single-payer, universal health care program.[1]

After setting up Saskatchewan's universal healthcare program, Douglas stepped down and ran to lead the newly formed federal New Democratic Party (NDP), the successor party of the national CCF. He was elected as its first federal leader in 1961. Although Douglas never led the party to government, through much of his tenure the party held the balance of power in the House of Commons. He was noted as being the main opposition to the imposition of the War Measures Act during the 1970 October Crisis. He resigned as leader the next year but remained as a Member of Parliament until 1979.

Anthony of Kiev, also called Anthony of the Caves c. 983 – 1073), was a monk and the founder of the monastic tradition in Kievan Rus'. Together with Theodosius of Kiev, he co-founded the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (Kiev Monastery of the Caves).

He was born in Liubech (present-day Ukraine) in Chernigov Principality and was baptized with the name "Antipas". He was drawn to the spiritual life from an early age and left for the Greek Orthodox Esphigmenou Monastery on Mount Athos to live as a hermit. He lived in a secluded cave there overlooking the sea, which is open to visitors today. In circa 1011, the abbot gave Anthony the job of expanding monasticism in his native Kiev (present-day Kyiv, Ukraine)

Anthony became well known in the area for his strict asceticism. He ate rye bread every other day and drank only a little water. His fame soon spread beyond Kiev, and several people began to ask for his spiritual guidance or blessing. Soon, some people even offered to join him. Eventually, Anthony accepted the company of a few of them.

When we were kids my friend was reminding me of some important date coming up I shrugged "You probably even know when Flag Day is" She smiled back "June 14th!" The rest of her life we had Flag Day. I'd forget, but June 14th flags would appear; on my car or lawn or desk at work. Happy Flag Day
