around 2010 I’d moved into the Appalachian mountains and was thinking of the Greek folk song Olympos ke Kisavos when I sent this to McSweeney’s who rejected it as “too slight.”
I made a short (12-ish minute) low tech piece of music. First in a long, long time. I’m playing it at this show in Baltimore.

hats off to Baltimore’s Doris Elizabeth Cook (b. Sept. 14, 1924; d. Oct. 11, 2008) who wrote and published this poem as a postcard in May 1976 in response to the bicentennial hype and celebrations.
I, for one, had not previously encountered these, I assume, WWII era expressions of soft power. Uncle Sam saying “music for all our Arab friends!” is antithetical to the Musk Doctrine. Such waste! Ha!

A few early 20th century postcards I hadn’t seen before: Egypt, Turkey, Syria
produced by the Derounian Brothers photo studio in Aleppo Syria and hand-dated in pencil about the time it was founded, 1918. They seem to me (some speculation here) to be artistic self-portraits by Vartan Derounian (b. Arabkir 1888; d. Beirut 1954) age 30.

A Delaware music FB group was looking for evidence of Ra there. I found a 6-hour show in my hometown the year before I was born. Growing up, there was DuPont & Biden always in the air, but this other thing was there if you went looking. A 14 or 15 year old in the suburbs COULD find it.
