I took the camera out in the yard yesterday to see what insects can be found in my garden that’s comprised mainly of native plants. A kindly @inaturalist.bsky.social reviewer has confirmed that this is a type of hover fly called an Eastern Calligrapher (Toxomerus geminatus).

I found a Hackberry Petiole Gall on my hackberry tree! This means a tiny insect called a psyllid has injected enzymes into the tree through its saliva causing this growth to occur that the psyllid lays its eggs in. There are a few different species of gall psyllids that use the leaves of this tree.
