BREAKING: Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, a citizen of the White Earth Nation, has won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, defeating U.S. Rep. Angie Craig. If elected in November, Flanagan would make history as the first Native American woman to serve in the U.S. Senate.

113 years ago today, Jim Thorpe became the first Native American to win Olympic gold. Born on the Sac and Fox Nation reservation in 1887, Thorpe overcame the loss of his family and the trauma of boarding schools to become a sports legend —playing in both the MLB and NFL until age 41.
