The other woman didn't flinch at this. "Where has Jackson gone, besides school and home, over the last seven days?"
"This is gonna be a long list," Eve said, growing impatient.
"He's an active kid. I'll write it down."
When Eve was done listing the week's various after-school activities and where they occurred, the shorter woman returned and whispered something to the tall one. Three syllables.
Positive? Negative?
A muffled shout erupted from outside, and Eve ran to the doorway before the women could tell her not to.

Eve had brought Jackson's phone with her in case some notification popped up that would give her a clue, but it stayed silent in her pocket. She didn't even know which apps he may have installed. She had ditched her own smartphone for one of the "distraction-free" retro flip models years ago, when she found herself being drawn into inflammatory comment threads on every newsfeed. It was too easy to get lost for hours in the silicone quicksand of bots insulting each other.
