How did the genocide in Congo start?
1. Colonialism planted the seed in the late 1800s with King Leopold of Belgium. Over 10 million Congolese people died under his regime. The land was pillaged for rubber and ivory and the trauma never healed.
2. Independence and interference.
Congo gained independence in 1960 but peace was never allowed. The west, fearing Congo's power, assassinated its first elected leader: Patrice Lumumba. They replaced him with a dictator, Mobutu who ruled for 32 years funded and supported by the US and Europe.
3. Rwanda's Invasion (1996-now)
In 1994 after the Rwandan genocide, Rwana invasded Congo under the pretext of hunting rebels. In truth they wanted Congo's minerals. Backed by Western weapons and money, Rwanda's army and rebel groups began massacring villages, ra*ing women and girls, enslaving children, taking over mining regions

Scientists and physicians can't do it all. Social media users, you play a role too: develop your health literacy skills, think critically and approach content with healthy skepticism. Before sharing or acting on health content, ask yourself: Who is sharing this? What are their credentials? What is their intention in sharing this information?

Content can be spliced and misused

One time I had a viral reel repurposed for right-wing and anti-trans propaganda. People can cut your videos up any way they see fit. For an early career scientist on the job market, that put my professional reputation at risk. People do this because content coming from a doctor carries a lot of weight

Online harassment and trolling

Posting about vaccings, reproductive health or climate science often brings hateful comments, DMs or threats. Followers have called physicians and scientists bosses at hospitals and universities to report them for sharing evidenced based information or even made up claims to try to get them fired. Haters have also shown up at their workplaces. Most physicians and scientists places of work are public and on Google. This harassment discourages experts from sharing their work and creates a hostile online environment

Oversimplification of complex science

Nuanced findings on, say, maternal health or contraceptives don't translate well into short-form TikToks or Reels. Scientists risk being misunderstood - or accused of "bad science" - when audiences only see bite-sized, context-free explanations
