Fuel poverty is twice as likely to trap Disabled people as non-disabled people. Cutting fuel bills is a start. But we need a long-term solution: a 'social tariff', for unavoidable extra energy costs. The Timms Review's interim report contains a lot of nuanced analysis, echoing what Disabled people have been saying for years. Today's news coverage hasn't reflected this. Instead it's dominated by kneejerk reactions as part of more ‘welfare panic’ that demonises Disabled people.

The Government are failing to learn the lessons of Grenfell. We say Disabled people deserve better. Almost half (41%) of the Disabled residents of Grenfell Tower died in the fire. The inquiry recommended fire evacuation plans called PEEPs (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans).

Inclusion London welcomes Co-production Week as an opportunity to celebrate the power of Disabled people in shaping society, not just in social care, but in every area of life that supports our Independent Living. We are committed to demanding co-production as a key way to realise our rights. It goes hand in hand with campaigning and influencing – they are different tools to deliver our liberation. But Disabled people are frequently left out of co-production opportunities because the opportunities are inaccessible and do not share our values to achieve disability justice. We want to see that reality change, by creating co-production opportunities, working from the social model of disability and welcoming everyone, including talking about other experiences of discrimination too.
