Through a series of talks, panel discussions, and case study analyses, participants examined key regulatory hurdles and explored risk assessment strategies for environmental applications of genetically engineered microorganisms.
Modifying the genomes of microorganisms holds tremendous promise — from reducing greenhouse gas emissions to using fewer inputs to grow food. But we need clear, risk-based regulatory frameworks to translate this rapidly growing area of research into real-world applications.
The IGI Public Impact team’s Manar Zaghlula and Elizabeth Njuguna convened 50 regulators, innovators, and experts from 11 countries for a two-day workshop in Berkeley last week on an important topic: how do we create regulatory frameworks for genetically engineered microorganisms? #crispr 🧬🧪🦠
