Social democracy has been described as the most common form of Western or modern socialism, as well as the reformist wing of democratic socialism. Amongst social democrats, attitudes towards socialism vary: some retain socialism as a long-term goal, with social democracy being a political and economic democracy supporting a gradualist, reformist, and democratic approach towards achieving socialism. Others view it as an ethical ideal to guide reforms within capitalism. While both social democracy and democratic socialism once referred to movements seeking to achieve socialism, modern social democracies retain a capitalist system, whereas democratic socialists continue to advocate for its abolition. Nevertheless, the distinction remains blurred in colloquial settings, and the two terms are commonly used synonymously.

The Third Way is an offshoot of social democracy which aims to fuse economic liberalism with social democratic economic policies and center-left social policies. It is a reconceptualization of social democracy developed in the 1990s and is embraced by some social democratic parties; with some political scientists and analysts characterising the Third Way as an effectively neoliberal movement.

Neoliberalism benefits the wealthy at the expense of everyone else, and it has resulted in the grotesque and unprecedented levels of wealth inequality we now see worldwide.

There's no reason to think voters chose this willingly. It has been forced upon them by both parties for over 30 years.

Then explain Reagan's popularity. You're coming at this from a rationalist perspective. Bigotry isn't rational, and folks will behave irrationally if it caters to their bigotry. Yes, they absolutely supported massive tax breaks, because that's what was necessary to destroy the social safety net.

Senate Dems overwhelmingly (70%) voted for DOMA and Clinton signed it with a statement saying he opposed government recognition of same sex marriages. Obama was against them in 2008 as well. Dems started to shift their rhetoric in 2012, but little happened until Obergefell in 2015.
