Wildlife is healthiest when it finds its own food.

A bird that doesn't fly away may need help, not a closer look. Call the experts if you come across a bird in distress.

A great beach day starts with sharing the shore. Keep your distance so wildlife can go about their day undisturbed.

When 13-year-old Leo found an injured Brown Pelican tangled in fishing gear in Alameda, he jumped in to help and, alongside the Alameda Police Department, safely recovered the bird. Apparently, this Red-footed Booby didn't get the memo that school was out for summer. Found starving and disoriented on a Los Angeles campus, the tropical seabird was far from the warm ocean waters where its species is typically found.

Since March, our two California wildlife centers have received 250+ birds affected by starvation. Seeing birds struggling to find food and washing up on beaches can feel overwhelming and leave us feeling helpless. But when birds reach care in time, recovery is possible.

Last week’s #EndangeredSpeciesDay was a chance to reflect on the resilience of seabirds and the second chances made possible through rescue and care. Every comeback story is different, but they all share the same outcome: recovery and returning safely back to the wild.

Sometimes it pays to have big friends nearby. In CA, Elegant Terns are often found nesting close to much larger Caspian Terns, which more aggressively drive predators away from their nests. Seeing the two species together offers a rare chance to appreciate their differences up close. 📷 Rick Lewis
