From LA County Vector Control's "What's the Buzz?" Newsletter. Watch out for mosquitoes. Don't let them breed.

West Nile virus (WNV) activity has increased across Greater Los Angeles, the state of California, and much of the United States. Within our service area, we've already detected 78 WNV-positive mosquito samples and 28 WNV-positive dead birds — more than at this time last year. The increase may be due, in part, to a milder winter and serves as an important reminder to take steps to prevent mosquito bites.

Pork chomp.

Trees are complicated. They're self-repairing shade, beautification, and habitat all in one, but they have an unpredictable impact on infrastructure that can make places inaccessible in ways that are very costly to fix. Consider this former bus stop in Boyle Heights:

A Google Streetview screenshot dated April 2025 shows a bus stop pole in front of a ficus tree. The tree's roots are spilling over the curb and have lifted part of the sidewalk several inches. The address shown is 1170 Boyle Avenue.

Like, here's Houston, TX. Orange are Level 3, green are Level 2. See where it says "zoom in to see more"? And because my car doesn't use NACS (Tesla) chargers, they're not even shown. Your impression of the infrastructure is several years old. It's time to update it.

My doggie has had some weird pain thing going on that has convinced her she shouldn't sleep. She's been refusing to lie down or even sit down most of the day, literally falling asleep on her feet. Finally got her to rest. Yay puppy snores!

While Angelenos cower from the apocalyptic storm, the Paayme Paxaayt (AKA the Porciúncula and now the Los Angeles River) is fat and happy. I got very invested in the struggle of one piece of flotsam to free itself from a storm drain (in comments).
