What does a grain have to do with anti-fascist economics? Everything. Penguin put the whole argument on the UK cover of my book. A thread 🌾
The biggest gift for an academic is time to do research in peace and quiet. That’s exactly what the Berlin Institute of Advanced Studies offers. Thrilled to be a fellow for the academic year 2026/2027. I’m back in the German capital!
Will zombie neoliberalism resign along with Starmer? Burnham has the decisive shot at anti-fascist economics. The far right is on the doorstep. Reform ahead in the polls. This is the moment to show: there is an alternative (TIA), there always was.
Just as expected: Refinery margins shooting up like rockets with the latest uptick in crude oil prices. This is why we need refinery margin caps as in Austria instead of gas subsidies as in Germany.
They say an author is "pregnant" with a book. As a new mum, I can confirm the analogy doesn't stop there: books have a postpartum period too — copy-edits, page proofs, sleep deprivation and all. Anti-fascist Economics has reached the final pass at @penguinrandomhouse.bsky.social! Out in October!
Honored to deliver the Polanyi Lecture in Vienna tomorrow. Join me in person or online! Register at link below.
Maybe this should have been the cover for Anti-fascist Economics!?
🍅🍅🍅Tomatoflation 🍅🍅🍅 Price of tomatoes is up 39.7%. That’s terrible news for food affordability *and* public health. Tomatoes are one of the most popular fresh vegetables. Chart via @weisenthal.bsky.social
Cascade effects from systemically significant prices like energy and chemicals are coming, but it takes some time for them to ripple through supply chains. So, stay tuned. Thanks for the shoutout, @weisenthal.bsky.social! Our research paper is available here: academic.oup.com/icc/article/...
The so-called Vibecession was always about the prices of essentials. When the stuff people can’t do without becomes out of reach, people are right to have bad vibes. Housing affordability in the Biden years was worse than during the subprime mortgage bubble.
How to stop the global oligarchy? My answer is Anti-fascist Economics. Building back power for democracy starts from reclaiming the essentials of life from the exclusive rule of profits. So inspiring to join the discussion with @sanders.senate.gov. Thank you for your leadership!
BREAKING: The fight over the prices of essentials is out in the open. What you pay for the things you can’t do without is a political question. Affordability in this crisis means facing up to corporations. The supermarkets aren’t thrilled with the cap, even though it’s voluntary.
Germany is conducting a nationwide experiment on whether austerity and neoliberal reforms really fuel the rise of the extreme right. So far it’s confirming the state of the literature. A new poll has the AfD at 28 percent, a comfortable 6 percent ahead. Chart via @patrickkaczmarczyk.bsky.social
There is one country in the world that stands out for its political economy of preparedness: China. Oil reserves are a state secret but the IEA estimate is low compared to Chinese news reports which suggest the reserve holds 180 days of national consumption.
Voters think they can have it all: an affordable life and a livable planet. They are right. Both is at the core of an anti-fascist economics that centers on making life livable for all rather than letting the far right dystopia of a burning planet rule. Chart via @triofrancos.bsky.social
“The economic policies we need for an economy centered on people’s needs, capabilities and dignity are pretty obvious, the question is power.” It’s unreal that it took until today for me to meet the one and only @darrickhamilton.bsky.social!
“Today, it’s no longer about class struggle between capital & labor but about an economy that either serves life or death.” - Gustavo Petro We need an “economia para la vida”. In the energy crisis this means a multilateral oil buyers’ club instead of Darwinian markets.
Ich während ich mir anhöre, dass der Staat leider immer weniger Geld hat.
It will be the law of the jungle. Market analysts are already predicting that rich countries will outbid poor countries for scarce oil and gas supplies. This means energy famine for the Global South. Link: www.ft.com/content/6ca1...
Economics can either enable the slide toward fascism, or defend affordability, dignity, and democracy. I wrote ANTI-FASCIST ECONOMICS with my baby by my side—a constant reminder that the future should be livable for all. Out in October with Random House.
To defeat the extreme right an economics for the common people is indispensable. Honored to be part of a new Global Council for progressive economics under the leadership of @mazzucatom.bsky.social and Spain‘s Minister of the Economy @carloscuerpo.bsky.social. Spain’s success is showing the way.
The incoming crisis of inflation cannot be fixed by hiking interest rates. As President Gustavo Petro and I discussed today in Barcelona, it will require bold economic policy — from food price stabilization to ambitious energy investment. Gracias, Presidente 🇨🇴
Disaster capitalism on steroids Spiking fertilizer prices have brought back the specter of a new world food crisis. Meanwhile the stocks of a handful of companies that control the fertilizer market are surging. Link: seekingalpha.com/article/4882...
An economic tsunami is sweeping across the world that’s the direct result of the US-Israeli attack on Iran. The wave is in plain sight & it’s starting to hit the shores. Talked with @owenjones.bsky.social about a looming food crisis, broken supply chains, profits & sellers’ inflation.
Finance ministers of Germany, Spain, Portugal, Austria & Italy are calling on the EU to introduce a windfall profits tax on energy companies. This is a no brainer and should be implemented swiftly. Our democracies can’t take another redistribution shock. www.spiegel.de/wirtschaft/h...
