My little DEER-PROOF garden this year, such as it is.

Washington's flag has to be one of the laziest, right? They couldn't even be bothered to finish mimicking a dollar bill.

The flag is just a picture of George Washington with a light blue background in a circular yellow frame that sasy "The Seal of the State of Washington 1889". The rest of the flag is just green.

A closer view of a specimen showing the large, glossy leaves and flowers inside. Not the large yellow thing that looks like a big petal. That's called a 'bract'. The flowers are coming off what looks like the giant stamen inside the plant, tiny little yellow buds off the greenish yellow stalk.

Hand for size reference. The leaves are roughly 3-4 hand-lengths long. Wait a minute, I have a tape measure. I'll be right back.

The leaves are roughly 18-24 inches long, which is pretty big for a plant around here.

There's a lot of cool mosses out there

These ones are kind of feathery and have a green stalk growing out that forms a leaf shaped tip that bends away

This one almost looks like wheat growing out of some tall grass but it's all moss

The shades of green on this one were fantastic, the darker, fresher green around the edges giving way to the paler yellow-green in the center
