Statement from Mayor Mamdani on Supreme Court Decision to Uphold Birthright Citizenship

NEW YORK – In response to the Supreme Court’s decision to reaffirm birthright citizenship and strike down the Trump administration’s executive order denying citizenship to children born to immigrant parents without legal status or on temporary visas, Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani released the following statement:

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling affirms a promise that was written into our Constitution more than 150 years ago: if you are born on American soil, you are an American citizen, no matter the color of your skin, where your parents were born, how you worship, or the language you speak at home. This should never have been in doubt. The federal administration sought to rewrite one of the clearest guarantees in our Constitution in an effort to decide who belongs in this country and who does not. Today, the Court rejected that effort.

“New York City is living proof of the power of birthright citizenship. The children of immigrants are our teachers, nurses, construction workers, small business owners, artists, public servants and neighbors. They are New Yorkers, and they are Americans.

“So, to every immigrant family across the five boroughs: hear me clearly. You belong here. Your children belong here. No court can erase your humanity. No political agenda will change what we know to be true: this country's diversity is our greatest strength. As long as I am mayor, New York City will defend your rights, protect your dignity and stand shoulder to shoulder with you in the fight for a better America.”

Top issues among NYers

Given a list of nine issues and asked which is the most important one in deciding who to vote for in the election for mayor, 30 percent of likely voters say crime, 21 percent say affordable housing, and 13 percent say inflation, with no other issue reaching double digits.

The top issue for young likely voters is different than other age groups:

18 to 34 year olds: affordable housing (33 percent), crime (20 percent), health care (11 percent), and inflation (11 percent), with no other issue reaching double digits.
35 to 49 year olds: crime (32 percent), affordable housing (24 percent), and inflation (13 percent), with no other issue reaching double digits.
50 to 64 year olds: crime (36 percent), affordable housing (15 percent), and inflation (15 percent), with no other issue reaching double digits.
65 years of age and over: crime (30 percent), affordable housing (15 percent), inflation (15 percent), and health care (12 percent), with no other issue reaching double digits.
