GHG budgets in global open #peatlands follow a humped curve along the moisture gradient. Naturally wet and extremely dry ecosystems capture #CO2 in plant growth while moderately moist peatlands #respire CO2 and emit #N2O.
The study involved gas and soil sampling, and metagenome and qPCR-based microbiome analysis in 48 open (i.e. without trees) peatlands. The highest emissions were observed in potato fields on fen peat in Uganda (pictured).
Our global study shows #peatlands in both their wet and dry extremes capture greenhouse gases while soil bacterial and archaeal abundances are low. Peatlands with moderate moisture levels globally emit #CO2 and #N2O gases, while #bacteria and #archaea flourish. doi.org/10.1038/s41598-025-92891-z
