I did a panel earlier this year on character development, and the idea of "earned subversion," where there an "earned" payoff to keeping a characters traits very consistent for a long time, for the purpose of getting to make jokes way later on in their arc. This is my favorite example of this 😭😭

Friends Won Through Paintings

Artists in the past have been able to capture many things and places in their paintings, but few can claim to have captured the heart of an entire town through their paintings and drawings.

A/2C Earle L. Hines, 548th Tac Recon Sq., has done just this with the town of Hamura, which is located approximately six miles northwest of Yokota Air Base.

Hines moved into the small farming town, after locating an approved private rental suitable for his wife and family, in December 1957. At this time the people of Hamura reacted unfavorably toward Americans living in the village and a petition was passed around to force the Hines family out.

The landlord was an understanding man and refused to make them move...

...Having settled down to a normal family life Hines noted that groups of children would join whenever he worked outdoors in the front yard, and drawing. Often he would take his materials out in the front yard, where it was roomier, and work. He noticed the children peering over the hedge at him. He would try to engage them in conversation and invite them in to see his work, but they were too shy to come closer then the hedge. Through his friendly manner and with the help of his Japanese wife, Hines gradually got the children to come into the yard and watch him.

The youngsters showed a sincere desire to learn to draw as well as Hines does. Airman Hines soon found himself giving tips on the way certain lines were drawn to the kids. One thing lead to another and he soon found himself instructing about 27 children.

Soon it got to be a familiar scene to see a group of kids around Hines and the easel with the older neighbors watching from behind the hedge...

...As time went on Airman and Mrs. Hines decided that they would like to give classes, free of charge, to the youngsters. This idea was met with great enthusiasm by the children and now about 19 children go to the Hines home each night, except Sunday, for two hours instruction in drawing and painting. Often Hines’ parents help the youngsters when great distances just to tell the Hines’ that their boy or girl would not be able to attend that night due to sickness. This willingness on the part of the kids to attend the classes amazed the parents, who have a hard time getting them to do their homework.

Gradually the attitude of the towns people changed and many have become close friends of the Hines’ including the original author of the petition...

Hines, who hails from St. Louis, Mo., has been drawing ever since he was five years old and since coming to Japan he has gone into oil paintings. His wife has also taken up painting. Mrs. Hines has gone into oil paintings and attended the Chicago Art Institute for a short time before entering the Air Force.

Hines and his wife found their mutual interest in art. She has studied art through a correspondence course and is currently engaged in several works using water colors.

I recently got this very sweet letter, it is from a Japanese woman who was doing research on Black and Japanese cultures for her masters thesis, she was very kind to write me and tell her appreciation of my family and their story! Before that I didnt know anyone else knew! (Alt text has transcript)

I’m Sachiko [her last name], and I’m sending this article regarding your parents and sister in case you haven’t read it or you don’t own a copy of this Ebony magazine (Jan. 1959).

Since I studied the connection between the African American and the Japanese for my masters and this article never appeared when I was working on my research for some reason, it made me so happy when I found the vintage Ebony at a thrift store near my place in Philly.

Your father’s contribution to the Japanese community/society was and is significant and I wish I could have said thank you to him directly.

Also, I respect and admire your mother Suma for following her heart since I can easily imagine the hardships she’d been through as an Asian immigrant who had an interracial marriage in the 50s.

For me, a new Japanese immigrant (I came to the states in 2019) who married to a Italian-American man, your parents’ story was very empowering and comforting especially in this political climate.

I hope this article gives you some positive energy or reminds you of the days your family talked about it.

there was a family legend about a singular redwood tree on the farmland that my mom talked about. She knew the land better than anyone! In her old age and old mind she could no longer get to it anymore, but she described where it was. I was skeptical- But I did find it, right where she said n.n
