Don’t ask me why I've only just read this; I don’t know how it passed me by. It's one of the most beautiful novellas I have ever read and the denouement, specifically the final sentence, ripped my heart out and shredded it into tiny morsels. My God the man can write. cc @kirkdalebooks.bsky.social

Culture update 3: Back to 2026…Confessions II is just brilliant…possibly even better than Confessions I. It’s so obviously for us boys as well as for everyone & that video is a work of genius…it's hard to create the sense of being in a nightclub on film and she has really done it. Brava!
Culture update 2: (2) I’ve also just read Middlemarch, at last. I’ve been meaning so to do for many years and now was the time. I studied it with pen in hand as I used to do with literature at Uni. I won’t try to be intellectual about it but my over-riding impressions are:
Culture update 1: I’ve just read John of John by Douglas Stuart. I think he has surpassed himself even though the first two novels were themselves superb. He’s now right up there with Hollinghurst as the most beautiful and compelling writer.
