I make books, drinks, and magic in Portland, Oregon. Founder at Seabird: Read my books:
Late summer pizza with @blueskybeth.bsky.social with herbs from our garden: tomato, buffalo mozzarella, oregano, sage, nasturtium petals, pecorino, other herbs. Cooked Neapolitan style. One of my favorite pies we've made all year!
Got new Detroit-style pizza pans from @blueskybeth.bsky.social, so trying them out with focaccia with rosemary and sage from the garden.
As I wrote in May, seriously addressing the harms of smoking requires better than the likes of Trump and RFK, but also better than liberals and progressives offering knee-jerk hostility to safer alternatives. www.theunpopulist.net/p/corruption...
Exciting mail delivery: the first printed copies of The Bartender's Library have finally arrived! Our publisher, Chronicle, did an incredible job transforming our long Word file into a gorgeous book about spirits and cocktails. Coming to bookstores October 13!
When you only remember to turn on Strava for the Naked Bike Ride you end up with weird and unimpressive stats. 3rd fastest 10k lifetime!
Just left a hipster coffeeshop. All the liberals were reading The Reconstruction Papers, whispering about how great it is to see @liberalcurrents.com in print.
Oh, so that's why this coyote I saw walking the streets of Portland last night didn't answer to Jeff.
Some personal news: I'm the new guitarist in Cake. Correction: the new guitarist on cake.
Set up a mobile pizza station for our street's 4th of July block party:
A few years ago my coauthor and I planned a dinner to celebrate our book but never got around to it. Now we've finished a second book and figured it was time to celebrate both, so we opened a bottle of vintage port older than both of us. And wow, now I know why people hold on to these for decades.
I don't know what the supply of Chartreuse is like in DC these days, but this seems like an excellent time for local bars to revive the Swampwater cocktail.
Lots of discussion today about the relative toxicity of various social media models, so if you want to try something new, I'll re-up the invitation to join @seabirdreader.bsky.social, where you can only share posts with links, there are no replies or quote-posts, and you only get 3 posts per day.
As if there weren't enough ways AI is making things bad for writers, now it also generates text for scams like these that are just plausible enough to waste a moment reading. I've received at least three so far. (Red flag: advance copies of my book aren't out yet, so they're just making things up.)
Look at our dog posing like he's about to be painted by a Dutch master. 📷: @blueskybeth.bsky.social
Really digging having an outdoor wok station for things like whipping up phat kaphrao for a quick weekday lunch.
They're kind of a thing in the cocktail/bar world, mostly thanks to Fernet-Branca (brilliant idea to make a challenge coin for people buying your own product). Mostly collected rather than used for actual challenging I think.
Stocking up on personalized ceramic bottles of cask-aged corenwyn in case I'm ever appointed to a powerful position in law enforcement.
Wrote up a bit more about my new book, The Bartender's Library, coming out in October and drawing from the Multnomah Whiskey Library in Portland, Oregon. Available for pre-order now! www.jacobgrier.com/blog/2026/05...
If you're into bitter non-alcoholic cocktails, turns out this bottled Suze tonic rules.
I made a batch of this sour cream liqueur from Faviken for a friend's party last summer. Most of it is still hanging out in the fridge.
Headed up to Seattle Cocktail Week to find out if my class on beer cocktails can compete with puppy yoga. Say hi if you're around!
It's an app just for recommending links without all the other distractions of social media. Try it out!
My friend sent me this screenshot from when he Googled my name, and I've gotta say I like this new bio.
