He’s cutting down dozens with a cutlass, he’s trick-riding off the side of his horse, he’s Legolas with a musket. He’s adjusting fighting styles on the fly, abandoning typical British stand-and-shoot fare for more modern tactics. Sometimes the film remembers that he’s also supposed to be doing all this while super sick, which only makes the climactic battle seem like the Founding Father equivalent of the Michael Jordan flu game.

On December 23, 1935, exactly 89 years ago today, Walt Disney sent out a memo to Don Graham, head of the studio’s internal training and orientation classes. The letter outlines what Disney values in an animator, and what he values in animation. “The point must be made clear to the men that our study of the actual is not so that we may be able to accomplish the actual, but so that we may have a basis upon which to go into the fantastic, the unreal, the imaginative,” Disney wrote. “A good many of the men misinterpret the idea of studying the actual motion. They think it is our purpose merely to duplicate these things. This misconception should be cleared up for all.” This is a misconception that Walt Disney Pictures is investing everything into, one placed centerframe by Mufasa: The Lion King.

The cult of photorealism is wearing me out

Moana is a shadow, resembling a real thing in shape if little else. It’s not unlike any number of theme park rides or rushed-out video game adaptations—merchandising designed according to someone else’s schematics. Hiring an acting student to show up as Moana to your kid’s birthday might actually involve more creativity, because that live-action version of Moana will actually have to engage with the wild imaginations of her audience. But these self-cannibalizing do-overs continue to make money, which means Disney’s efficiency at making them will only increase. A decade will soon seem like an eternity to wait. Eventually, Disney will be able to skip the animations entirely.
